Maybe it's just me, but this drive screams rebadge for some reason.

I have the same feeling :o
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

"More affordable" than the 716. Plus it supports some faster speeds. So it is faster but cheaper and not as good? That doesn't make sense.

yeah it's a typo but it's in Plextor's own product description page. 11 ZCAVs there!

Hello!

Saw that in a german forum:

http://www.brennmeister.com/forum/jump2 ... ost=902225

And it seems to be a Benq, the look of the Plextor 740 is very similar to the MSI 16B
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Well, maybe after their experience with the 716, they decided to change their strategy up a bit.

I think they only want to reduce the cost.

Absolutely. The PX-716A is overkill for most consumers and priced considerably higher than the drives from the competition. With the 740A, they're going to go head to head with the mid range drives.

At 79 EUR ($101US), the 740 is still more expensive than a lot of drives out there. It will be interesting to see if consumers shell out the extra $$$ for the Plextor name.

I was close. Official MSRP is $109.

Still.. it makes you wonder what Plextor is thinking. To me a $109 drive is still fairly expensive.

Maybe Plextor decreases the price when Nobody buys the 740 but the Benq 1640 :)

I think the 8x DVD-R DL writing speed on Plextor Europe's website is a typo... at least if it is based on the DW1640. After talking to BenQ, they said they currently have no plans to support 8x writing speeds.

Hmm Plextor could add it themselves.

Guess we have to see when the drive is out there.

Heh, that would be a good way for Plextor to confuse everyone about if they made it or not :D

Yep, it totally does.. which makes me think the 8x -R DL writing speed is a typo on Plextor's behalf.
