DVDs that are readable on both sides

Postby Hibiki04 on Sat Aug 06, 2005 2:46 am

Does anyone know the quality/stats on those dvds that are readable on both sides of the DVD (there's no label on them). I bought a few tv season boxes (offical ones) that came with DVDs like that, or is it better to buy the tv series season boxes with the single sided DVDs (if I can find them that is). Are they just as good as single side dvds?

Any information on these types of DVDs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Double sided(DVD-10) are just two DVD-5 and hold 9.4GB.
Single sided and single layer(DVD-5) hold 4.7GB.
Single sided and dual layer(DVD-9) holds 8.5GB.
Dual sided and dual layered(DVD-18 holds 17.1GB.

The media doesn't matter but how they encode them does.

double sided single layer is more difficult to make then single sided single layer, but probably about as hard as single sided dual layer. Double sided dual layer is more difficult to make, but can be done.

Generally speaking, all pressed discs should be of good quality.... however I personally have had a rash of pressed DVDs with huge manufacturing problems, so it's not a guarentee either.

No double sided is easier as dual Layer. It's not that much more dificult as single layer. In theory it's 2 single layer disc's you make withouth the policarbonate toplayer and which are glued overall together.
Specially when talking about recordables dual layer becomes more problematic.

Dual sided is more problematic when you talk about handleing ( scratches.) (Scratching any layer means problem. Why with normal single layer dvd recordables you can damage the protective top layer without getting into trouble.
