Acro Circle (Optodisc) tests to come

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

Postby wicked1 on Wed Aug 10, 2005 4:11 pm

I just tried to watch a movie I burnt in my 1640 at 8X in my XBOX and it skipped like mad. I took the disc out and put it in my computer and did a quality scan with my liteon and benq. Good quality according to them but then I did a transfer rate test and it sucked. Hrmm. Going to try to reburn the same movie again on an Optodisc this time with another drive though.

I'm really starting to think you have a lemon drive there...

I think Benq variance + optodisc (huge) variance = Problems.

Remember wicked1 tyg02 scans looked fine. So a complete lemon I won't say at least with the evidence so far.

Point is Lite On and Benq are very good readers while X-box dvd rom drives are very poor readers.

While it's true Optodisc media does vary in quality from batch to batch, it's more an issue with their B Stock product, and it also seems some European stock. I have personally had consistant quality on all my 8x DVD-R and 8x DVD+R media from Acro Circle... which is something I can NOT say about 16x Acro Circle (the white inkjet printable ones seem to have more problems, and there are larger variations between 16x batches), and the older 4x DVDRs. I've seen much worse variations from Verbatim's 8x DVDR media then I have from Acro Circle in North America.

Of course, there is always the chance I'm just lucky... but most of my spindles come from different productions batches.

I bought some TYG02 and Acro Circle 8x -R Optodisc after dolphinius_rex recommended them for the benq in another thread. TYG02 are scanning great as usual. The Acro Circle though is giving me mixed results. PIFs are good, PIE averages are anywhere from 20 to 120 from the same spindle. Decent but not as good as I hoped, maybe the TY's have overwhelmed me. I'll try to post screens later tonight.

Alright I will now finally say it. Optodiscs sucks. I have burnt 30 of them and they all stutter or stammer or have transfer rate problems. Maybe I just got the bad batch. These are all from the same spindle. I havent opened the other spindle yet. I find it very weird though these get better quality scores than my LONGTEN 001 media but my longten doesnt have issues playing or doing transfer rate tests.Whats the reason there?Reflectivity?
edit: oh yeah they all came from rima.com too.

Seeing wicked 1 signature I see 5 different drives of 4 different manufacturers.
My conclusion is it has to be the media.
I don't think it's reflectivity.

I know Rima has sold downgrade Optodisc as A Grade before... let me take a look into this.

Did your Acro Circle come with the Acro Circle cover sheet? or just a spindle of shiny silver discs?

Edit: If possible, please provide a photo of the media surface, and the packaging.

I just checked with Optodisc, and supposedly, if the media *IS* Acro Circle as it's supposed to be (Meaning A Grade with Acro Circle packaging), then the media you should have received would have even been from the exact same batch as the media I'm testing with in my review of the DW1640 (which I've already posted pictures of).

Something is *NOT* adding up here

I called Rima and they said to send them back with an RA number and stick to Taiyo Yudens because they are alot more reliable spindle to spindle. They were nice though and said they would refund the price no problem. Gonna order some more TYG02 or TYG01 as all my G03's arent very hot yet in burn quality. Still very useable though.

Well... it sounds legit, but I'm stumped. I'd rather you didn't RMA it though,... or not ALL of it. Can you send like 5 discs to me (or rather AviationWiz) so I can compare it to my own? Something is seriously wrong, and I want to know why this media is not performing properly.

Seeing results so far I suggest manufactureing defect.
Now what did they screw up ?
Ehh probally one way to get a answer.
Trow it into a way to expensive profesional anallyzer. (Datarius/AUdiodev)
and see how it shows up.
Also more people have reported playback problems with Optodisc media and X-box and PS2 and other cheap dvd players.

Optodisc is going to keep an eye out for if Rima RMA's the spindle too... I told them to test it as well.

I got mine from rima too. Forgot to do scans last night. So what should I do? I bought 2 50 dvd-r spindles of acro circle media. Silver matte discs and they have an acro circle label around the cake box.

I'll have some of Wicked1's media on August 17th. Give me until then to take a look at it and see if it's a media problem, or a drive variance problem. Rima will probably let you RMA the unopened spindles.

I don't remember which discs I had bad scans on, but I'll test some more when I get a chance. Here are some scans that I did save recently that are good (i think).

That last one is fairly close to what I'm getting... but somewhat more consistantly. Do some transfer rate tests on the media as well to see how they playback in the DW1640. That seems to be one of the BIG differences between Wicked1's burns and my own (other then his coasters...).

This disc scores well but wont playback in my LiteON set top player or my XBOX. It starts but skips and stutters badly. It has a bad transfer rate test too.

Are these DVD-Rs you're trying to play back on an XBox? Why I ask is becayse my stepson's XBox will only play DVD+Rs with the booktype set to DVD-ROM. All DVD-Rs I've tried have failed.
