Rare UFO Sighting: the Elusive '52x Yamaha CD Burner'

Postby stix on Fri Sep 02, 2005 5:36 am

And speaking of UFOs, aliens and such.....

someone has listed a "52x Yamaha CDRW" burner on a popular site. Complete with photos that anyone around here would recognize as not-possibly-Yamaha, as if the title was not enough. Perhaps this one was manufactured in another dimension.

auction site. didn't want to make it too obvious. not too difficult to track down.

It's obviously not a Yamaha, and I didn't think it would be right to post the URL here.

Just wanted to poke a little fun at the listing while we are here in the Beer Garden.

I remember having the 44x Yamaha, definitely my favorite CD burner of all time. If Yamaha had made DVD burners, I'd likely have bought one. It burned great with any media I threw at it, never a buffer underrun, and the blue (violet when burning) LED was just plain cool.

44x was where they ended at, and then they got out of the market, saying it wasn't profitable any more. Pity.

Post an url. I can't find it on eBay or Yahoo.

In any case, its obviously counterfeit. There were some Yamaha 52x CD-ROM drives floating around a few years ago that were actually manufactured by TOP-G:

this one maybe not so much counterfeit as simply someone stuck a label on it and the seller is gullible.
I emailed him to enlighten him, but he wouldn't listen. Insists that the label says it's a Yamaha. told him it doesn't matter what the label says.

the URL:

The picture on the auction looks like an Artec to me.

At first glance I just saw the F1 sticker and thought it was one... then Dolph pointed out it couldn't possibly be an F1, and that's when I looked at the picture with the drive tray and buttons.

That's an MSI CR52-A2 (OEM Optorite). The guy just covered up the MSI stuff with that fake Yamaha label.

Cool sleuthing job.

Is anyone going to tell him?

Maybe better to just point him to the thread?
