my thoughts on optorite drives, a review

Postby squirreld on Thu Jan 05, 2006 11:44 pm

I bought a optorite CW5205 cdr burner bak 10/20/2003. by 12/04 I was getting servo tracking errors. I contact optorite support, they had me do a few tests with cd-dvd speed over the phone and concluded that the drive was bad. since it was 2 mo. past the warranty (1 year standard), they did nothing for me. I figured, hey, not every drive in the world is perfect, just bad luck. it happens.

SO I bought another optorite DD0405 DVD burner in 1/05. I got married in 6/05 and bought a nice camcorder and all the fixings to film my wedding.
I have been playing with the files and made DVD's with them. Not a single movie I made is without skips. I noticed one movie just stopped playing. I took out the DVD and looked and I could see a ring in the outer 2 cm of the disc all the way around where no data was burnt.
amazing!
the skips are only about a second or 2, however, they are there. usually between 5-15 per DVD.
I played the files on the HD with powerdvd and saw no skips where they showed on the stand alone player.
I have tried 1,2, and 4X burning speed with nero and the burning software that came with my DVD editing/authoring software, sony vegas movie studio with DVD architect.
no luck, tried firmware updates, nothing.
I actually just started getting power calibration errors with the newer firmware so I went and put the old firmware on and it at least burns now, only the skips/missed data is ever present.
All media is TY DVD-R 4X media from supermediastore.

my opinion, spend your money elsewhere. these drives both have gone bad rite at the 1 year mark.
I barely ever use them.

my .02 cents

Congratulations!

I can second the Optorite dismissal.

They are crap.

Nothing more needs to be said.
