Nero 7 Ultra / HP DVD740i - LightScribe non-functional

Postby chad on Sat Feb 25, 2006 9:45 pm

I purchased a DVD740i a few days ago. I already had Nero 7 Ultra ed. so I did not install the bundled version 6.x OEM Nero. I did install Lightscribe from the Nero site (LS_HSI.msi Version 1.4.67.1). Upon trying to print, the dialog in Nero says "Waiting for the drive to become ready..." for several seconds, and then I get the error message as follows when trying to burn a LightScribe label:

"LightScribe disc information encoded in the middle of the disc could not be read. Please ensure that the disc is a LightScribe disc and properly oriented. Clean the disc per the LightScribe documentation."

The disc is in the drive correctly and I even used a new IDE cable to connect the drive during my troubleshooting.

This happens with the bundled LS CD that came with the drive, as well as Memorex ones I bought from Walmart.

This is a FRESH install of Win XP pro, I just installed today to make sure it wasn't just some software conflict I was having.

Any ideas?

verify that the Memorex media are clearly marked 'lightscribe' on the label.. I have never seen Memorex Lightscribe media. Their printable media is for InkJet based label printing. Re-read the memorex label and see if it says inkjet on the side of the packaging.

I bought my HP 740i at BestBuy and they have 25 and 30 packs of Verbatim Lightscribe DVD+Rs for $20 or so...

You are correct, they are Verbatim discs, not Memorex, and they are labeled as Lightscribe. I also cannot get it to work with the bundled lightscribe disc either though. Did yours work fine out of the box?

yeah, it did. I'd take it back and exchange it.
