PIE/PIF: Whats worse?

Postby MonsterMan on Wed Mar 08, 2006 12:28 am

OK, I've always been under the impression that PIF was worse than PIE. True?

What I mean:

Granted, both are basically great burns; but...Which would be the better burn?

I've seen some TDKs that were a heck of a lot bigger differance, but I can actually find these scans :-?

For those curious:
Both discs scanned on a BenQ DW1620 (in spite of having 3 other very good burners, still may fav!).
Disc one: BenQ 1655, Fuji Film DVD-R (Made in Japan, TYG02) @ 8x
Disc two: BenQ 1620, Imation "Force Field" scratch resistent DVD+R, Moser Baer, @ 8x

Still, I had a batch of Verbatium 16x DVD+Rs that produced a 2.2 PIE average, and a PIF total of 9 (in the BenQ 1620)...too bad the two current batchs I have aren't even close to that.

Why oh why does it seem Verbatium's and the Fuji/TY's (DVD-R) have such a huge quality variance from batch to batch!?! :(

Those scans are both rediculously good. Neither is particularly "better" than the other, but having said that i'd probably go for the TYG02.

Just be thankful your media burns that well, and don't obsess over small variances in quality. :D

Yeah, those were good. But, some others have shown PIE avg. of ~40 with low PIF, but then on another drive, avg. ~10 PIE with much higher PIF values.

I was just wondering which to look out for.

And yeah, I'm thankful my media burns that good :)

My LG 4167 does about the same with the TYs. The 1655 is the only thing that'll burn those Imations anywhere near that good, though.

I really like that 1655...still, for an all around drive, my old 1620 is just about unbeatable.

He He...I just gotta throw this one in too (burned on LG-4167):

My latest batch of TYs seem to be even better. Gotta do a test run tomorrow...

Man, I love having a bunch of great burners 8)

Well, the "standard" says that PIF shouldn't be above 4, although there's some play in that small spikes are usually ok (but not great).

In that sense, I'd rather a disc have higher PIE and PIF<4 than low PIE but PIF spikes > 4.

But I DO think people obsess over media scans waaaaaay too much. :) Scan a pressed disc someday, many (most?) of the DVDs we burn blow away any pressed disc!!! #-o

Just remember that the standard is measured at sum1, while BenQs scan at sum8.

True...isn't the "limit" with CDSpeed/sum8 20?

At 20, CD Speed has already started lowering its overall score. The max you want to see is 32.
