Another Revision Of Verbatim's 8x DVD+RW Media?

Postby Ian on Wed Apr 26, 2006 7:45 pm

About a year or so ago, I got some samples of Verbatim's 8x DVD+RW media. They had the MID you see below.

Code: Select all
0000 : 92 0f 04 00 00 03 00 00  00 26 05 3f 00 00 00 00   .........&.?....
0010 : 00 00 01 4d 4b 4d 00 00  00 00 00 41 30 33 00 39   ...MKM.....A03.9
0020 : 23 00 94 79 64 02 20 00  9c 7a 6c 02 20 00 9a 7b   #..yd. ..zl. ..{
0030 : 68 02 20 12 12 10 e0 00  f0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   h. .............
0040 : 01 00 17 38 00 29 8b 3e  02 24 00 2d 8e 38 02 24   ...8.).>.$.-.8.$
0050 : 00 2c 90 3e 02 24 44 35  30 e0 f0 30 40 00 00 00   .,.>.$D50..0@...

These discs were problematic as the MID was missing the data that told a drive they supported the 8x writing speed. Verbatim soon followed up with these discs.

Code: Select all
0000 : 93 0f 04 00 00 03 00 00  00 26 05 3f 00 00 00 00   .........&.?....
0010 : 00 00 03 4d 4b 4d 00 00  00 00 00 41 30 33 00 20   ...MKM.....A03.
0020 : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ................
0030 : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ................
0040 : 02 00 01 2e 70 54 00 48  ae 32 02 1f 00 50 a0 2c   ....pT.H.2...P.,
0050 : 02 21 00 4b aa 2e 02 21  00 00 05 0b 09 00 00 00   .!.K...!........
0060 : 82 00 05 07 00 00 ff ff  01 f6 f4 f2 11 12 00 fd   ................
0070 : 00 fe 01 05 01 06 10 0d  00 00 00 00 01 02 00 03   ................

As you can see, these discs have the extra data in the 0060 and 0070 rows.

Recently, I was sent a few discs by a company for a drive of theirs I was reviewing. They had the MID you see below.

Code: Select all
0000 : 93 0f 04 00 00 03 00 00  00 26 05 3f 00 00 00 00   .........&.?....
0010 : 00 00 03 4d 4b 4d 00 00  00 00 00 41 30 33 00 20   ...MKM.....A03.
0020 : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ................
0030 : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ................
0040 : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ................
0050 : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ................

Like the original revision, these discs were missing the data in rows 0060 and 0070. Oddly enough, they were also missing the data in rows 0020 through 0050.

I'd say that these discs were an error, but with one drive I'm testing they actually work at 8x while the other two revisions don't. Has anyone else seen Verbatim 8x DVD+RW discs with this MID?

Incorrect the MID is there the ADIP data for 8x burn strategy was not there.

Haven't seen any Verbatim 8x DVD+RW's in store at all !! :o
Infact I think that the only 8x DVD+RW's Verbatim media might be the handed out samples at this time.
I can get Ritek and ricoh 8x DVD+RW based media without much problems.

Whatever, you get what I mean. :P

Isn't Verbatim shipping their 8x DVD+RW media in Europe? It's about a year overdue here in the US. At this point I question if it ever will ship to retail.

I would love to try some Verbatim 8x DVD+RW media, but haven't seen any yet either.

The local stores don't carry any 8x stuff.:o Ricoh is available by mailorder and works well enough with my new drive.
