New Study - Film Piracy Costs Hollywood $6.1 Billion!?

Hollywood's major movie studios lost $6.1 billion in revenues in 2005 to illegal videos, DVDs and Internet downloads, which is about 75 percent higher than previous estimates, the studios' representative said.

In a study released late on Tuesday, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which represents the major studios in government affairs, said the study is the first to measure losses from Web downloading.

The study showed piracy in Asia is less a problem than in North America and Europe.

It also showed that losses stemmed not only from fewer ticket sales but also from fewer DVD sales which has been one of the growing business arenas in recent years.

I really can't feel bad for them, especially when I'm paying $10+ to see a movie, which more often than not suck.

Anyone know how much $$ the movie industry makes a year? I'm guessing they still make a pile of cash, even after Pirates "steal" some of the potential profits.

How do they estimate the "lost sales"? I will guess that they estimate the number of movies being bootlegged, copied, or shared, and multiply that times the market price for that movie on DVD. However, those copies of movies are very cheap on the black market. Customers will buy 20 movies at $1 or $2 each because that's affordable for them. It isn't affordable to buy 20 movies at $20 each. They may not buy movies if they were $20, and instead settle for renting them for $1 or $2.

The Chinese government may continue to crack down on these illegal movies, but only if trade sanctions are threatened from the US government. I doubt the Mexican government will help curtail their black market sales.

What happens if everyone decides to only legally rent movies, or check them out from the library, and not go to the theater nor buy DVDs for themselves. The movie industry would implode, wouldn't it?
