Taiyo Yuden Watershield CD-R / DVD-R media

Postby dolphinius_rex on Wed May 24, 2006 1:27 pm

Hey Everyone,

Taiyo Yuden has some new media coming out soon! It's called Watershield. It's an inkjet printable disc, that has a glossy shine to it, which is also water resistant.

I've had the oppurtunity to test some of these discs out recently, and I can tell you this. These discs look *MUCH* better then regular Taiyo Yuden inkjet printable media! And they have a very nice glossy look, and are water resistant. They dry VERY quickly!

As for pricing, I wouldn't be surprised if they ranged from $0.72-$0.82 USD per disc (for CD-Rs). I couldn't see them selling TOO much lower then $0.72 though.

Here's the Taiyo Yuden part number for the CD-Rs:
CDR80WPPSB-WS

I don't know when the DVD-Rs will be available, but expect the CD-Rs sometime in June, probably from Supermediastore, and Rima.

I'm guessing they're using something similar to Imation's AquaGuard, right?

Probably... although I haven't tried Imation's Aqua Guard personally, so I can't compare them.

The way Taiyo Yuden has been lately, I wouldn't be TOO surprised if TY is licensing this surface from Imation! :o

Well in case of primera who also has a watershielded printable we know that they are ussing Imation

Now I don't think Imation is currently making cd-r's. Still they do have the needed pattents but if I'm right imation only makes next generation formats themselves at this moment.

Also the cd-r's have been available for some time in europe. I think osmediatrade has been selling them for about a month now.

and
german

same store but swiss department.

Also the DVD recordables are allready available in europe.

So is it possible that TY makes these for Imation based on Imation and Primera's research ?? Well don't know but it doesn't sound impossible.

So it might be nice if someone can check the primera disc's and check up the manufacturer because they seem to be cheaper. (yeah I'm DUTCHmen so I like high quality for low prices. :D )

Interesting.... I had heard an interesting rumour that MAXELL had actually been behind the Primera discs :o

But my Maxell contact is away this week, I'll have to remember to pester him when he comes back!

Primera and Imation have made a big deal about those discs:

Of course, Imation probably isn't making them themselves so the original manufacturer could be Maxell.
