BenQ Developing Hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD Burner!?

Postby Ian on Mon Jun 12, 2006 9:35 pm

According to the Taipei Times, BenQ had a hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD burner at Computex.

Taking a safer path, BenQ Corp (明基) unveiled a hybrid burner, which can run both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs in standard desktop computers.

BenQ plans to introduce a new hybrid model for consumers to connect to their televisions, or computers in mid-August, a company staff member said at the Computex show.

Anyone have any further info? I haven't even seen any pics of the drive.

Lets hope this sort of thing happens, it will help the format war a bit as you wont have to choose sides, just buy what you like no matter what format.
Dual, triple, etc dvd burners have been readily accepted and sure are handy, buy what's on sale or what suits what your doing :)

BenQ will make it work. LiteON will make it cheap for them.

I think we have a winner :D

Based on Samsung comments I would say risky business at this time.
It seems that HD DVD and probably also Blu ray have a rule in the license that makes dual format drives not possible.

Now it's a question if that rule would still stand in a legal case.
And it's a question if some small workarround options make it possible to avoid it.
And it's a question if Benq will take the risks.

So let's see how this one will work out.
Trying to make something "foolproof" only forces nature to make a better fool.

The said rule is just another aspect that will alienate customers and make this format war draw on longer.

It's odd that we haven't heard more abou this hybrid drive. I can't believe that the Taipei Times were the only ones to see it.
