Sony's First Blu-ray Disc Drive Won’t Play Blu-ray Movies!?

This is either a really bad decision on Sony's behalf or poor reporting by CNET. I'm betting its the latter.

I think the guy was simply stating that with current video cards and PC's, most people will not be able to play back commercial Blu-ray movies, not that the drive won't support them altogether. Thoughts?

I've been told that it's more a problem with their OEM supplier being unable to incorperate AACS and still get the movies to play properly.
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Ok... maybe that Pioneer drive isn't so bad after all :lol:

More likely, its the software. As the article points out, InterVideo's WinDVD EX is pretty much the only game in town. It worked fine with the Pioneer drive but it won't recognize my Panasonic. People have speculated that the Sony is Panasonic based so that could be the problem.

Hrm... I'm pretty sure it's a BenQ/LiteON OEM.

You think? The specs are almost identical and it supports DVD-RAM.

The drive is a Panasonic and that drive will play commercial BD movies fine. For example Watch Impress played BD movies with the drive (rebadged as an external IO data if I remember correct) in a test and there are a couple of guys over at AVSforum that also have the drive and they are able to play BD-ROM movies (using Windvd 8 which is released in Japan).

Hrm... well then another major player will have a drive with big problems in the near future I think :o
