Lite-On LH-18A1P And SmartWrite Technology

Postby Ian on Wed Aug 23, 2006 11:41 am

Anyone know if the SmartWrite technology on the Lite-On LH-18A1P is simply a new name for HyperTuning or has Lite-On implemented BenQ's SolidBurn?

The new Lite-On drive comes with SmartWrite technology. This is a Lite-On technology to optimize the writing strategy for each particular writing session. Through the drive’s self learning mechanism, it automatically detects and decides the optimal write strategy for DVD±R recordable media.

SmartWrite has a smart writing algorithm to burn most DVD recordable media with the best write quality. It will automatically memorize the optimal write strategy for all recordable media the drive has ever burned.

AFAIK Hypertuning and Online Hypertuning were working names for the technology- they were initially preseent only in the test firmwares that LO workers made available at CDFreaks. The newest official FW versions for the 165P6S and 1635S (but not for other 5S and 6S models) also support this.

My guess is that this now the official moniker, more in keeping with other items (Smart-X and SmartBurn). But if the basic idea is the same, isn't the name really a moot point? What's the difference between Burnproof and Smartburn (and all those other buffer-underrun-prevention mechanisms) anyway?

SmartWrite looks to be the same as Plextor's AUTOSTRATEGY. Not a burn-proof method but a learning method for developing a strategy from unknown media.

i'd say MediumRare has got it right.

Heise has a note on LiteOn and Benq: BenQ is pulling out of the optical drive business in Europe.

But (why I'm posting here), they also say that the functional desription of Smart-Write matches Solid-Burn to a T. The desciption they have seems to match "Hypertuning".

The new official firmware versions for the 6S drives apparently support hypertuning now.
