Help Choose New Lite-On Drive For Write Quality Testing

Postby Ian on Tue Nov 28, 2006 8:12 pm

As many of you know, one of the drives I use for write quality testing is the Lite-On SOHW-1673S. I've been tossing around the idea of retiring it in favor of a SHM-165H6S or LH-18A1P so that I can take advantage of the jitter testing in CD Speed 4.70.

What are your thoughts on this?

I agree. How about the 165P6S or H6S? Better drives than the LH18AP.. dunno too much about the accuracy of the jitter scans using them though.

Yeah, I'm leaning more towards the SHM-165H6S. The LH-18A1P is just too new. As far as jitter goes, it can't be any more controversial than the BenQ results.

what is controversial?
jitter tests on the LH-18A1P ? or on the SHM-165H6S ? or on Lite-On drives in general ?
why are the 6S drives better than the new LH-18A1P ?

What are your thoughts on this?

I can't comment on the LH-18A1P but I have a LiteOn SHW-1635S and a LiteOn SHM-165P6S that can perform jitter scans, in addition to a Plextor PX-712 and two BenQ DW1655 drives.

It's always preferrable to have a second opinion about jitter, or any test for that matter, and my four (five) drives frequently don't agree on jitter when scanning the same DVD. My 5S drive usually reports lower jitter than the 6S drive, and the shape of the jitter graph isn't always the same; other members at CDFreaks have reported similar differences. This means that there's probably a difference between the 5S and 6S generations that cannot be explained by individual drive variation alone.

So it's possible that there's also a difference between jitter reporting on the 6S and 8A generations, although that is merely speculation.

So which one would be better? Both of them obviously! :D
Then you can report back on whether there are any significant differences between the two drives. ;)

If I had to choose between buying the two and I didn't already have a 6S drive, I would probably choose the 6S drive because it's proven to be a solid performer and because I personally don't care about 18x writing.

That's my 2 cents worth and you get it for free.

I was talking about the BenQ results. We've seen high jitter rates on discs burned by certain drives.
