Playing movies w/LG H10N

Postby Pilgrim on Sat Feb 03, 2007 8:47 pm

Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this question. I have a LG H10N w/UJ12 Firmware. I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate from XP. When I was running XP I could play store-bought DVD movies in this drive. I would insert the disc, Windows Media Player would open and the movie would play. However, this is not the case now with Vista installed. When the autoplay starts I get an error message as shown in the screenshot, which isn't displayed when I preview but at least the link is there. Being a n00b, I haven't a clue how to resolve the inability to play these DVD movies. Any help would be appreciated. I do have the latest drivers for my EVGA GeForce 7600 GT card which I installed earlier today and which are designed to be Vista compatible.

Have you installed any DVD playback software? You'll need some as there isn't an MPEG2 decoder built into Vista. There wasn't one in XP but at some time, you probably installed some sort of DVD playback software.

Ian,

Thanks for the reply. I do have Nero 7 but I only installed a minimal number of apps. Which part of Nero's suite is needed to play these type of DVD's? Or.... would you recommend something better and is preferrably free?

Nero Show Time should do the trick. I don't think there are any free (at least legally free) players as you have to pay a royalty for the MPEG2 codec.

Thanks for the VLC suggestion. I checked out their Forums, which is a habit I have gotten into doing over the years, to see if there are any problems, tips on using the app, etc. and I'm glad I did. It seems that there are some serious problems with Vista compatibility. And, since I'm running Vista Ultimate..... well I guess that means it's not an option at this point. Oh, and let me make it clear that I am NOT in anyway even implying that it is Microsoft's fault. With every new release of an operating system there are always hardware/software incompatibility issues. However, I am duly impressed with Vista since there are relatively few compatibility issues compared to when Win 98 and XP were released due to the huge repository of native drivers included.

Ian,

Well, I finally got around to installing Nero ShowTime and it was a bust trying to play a couple of DVD movies that I got for Christmas. All I get is the Error dialog as shown in the attached screenshot. Any suggestions?

RESOLVED

Postby Pilgrim on Sun Feb 18, 2007 2:55 pm

After trying myriad things to try and resolve my inability to play purchased DVD movies it is now resolved.

Previously, I had been using the "hacked" firmware available on "Dangerous Brothers" website, which are "Region Free". I decided, after reading the notification on this forum of new factory firmware updates for this drive to update to the new GSA-H10N - JL12. Doing this fixed the problem for me.

I thought others who might encounter this problem might benefit from my experience.

WHY none of the "hacked" firmware versions allowed the playing of DVD movies in this drive, especially when they are "Region Free" escapes me. But then again, I am not that knowledgeable of how all this stuff relates together. :D

TDB f/w

Postby 2Dogs on Sun Feb 18, 2007 5:51 pm

I wonder if this is another feature/glitch of Vista? I use TDB firmware in some of my drives, and have no problem playing movies with Showtime, WinDVD, Media Player Classic and so on.

Motard or Retard?

Postby 2Dogs on Sun Feb 25, 2007 12:50 am

Who is this moron?

Why would anybody in their right mind wish to follow this stupid link?

Sensible people, such as most of those who generally make use of this forum, have AV and anti-spyware/malware programs that will always prevent these ridiculous scams having any effect.

I also find your use of the name "Motard" insulting. In my own mind, Motard suggests two-wheeled motor sports and competition, involving skill and courage. Hardly appropriate to you. About the closest thing to sport you might participate in would be the five finger shuffle.

What a complete tosser! Change your name to Retard, Motard, and get a life! I trust that this will be your one and only post. Maybe I should take time out to track you down and send you a few choice files.

Yeah, the Russian porn spammers have been out in full force this week. Most of it is filtered out but some obviously slips through. Just report it to a mod and it will be dealt with.
