Teac DV-W58G-A vs 16x media

Hi! Is there any way to burn on a Teac DV-W58G-A (fw: U4S8) with 8x speed on 16x media? I have purchased Verbatim 16x DVD+R media, hoping that I will be able to write with 8x speed, but the burner is offering only 2.4x speed... :( Teac has issued their latest firmware update in march 2006, so it may be that the media are not recognized correctly. :evil: Any workaround...?

Wow if that firmware doen't support Verbatim media correctly, I don't know what it will support. Usually all burners support Verbatim media very well.

Let us have at the Media code so that we know what ID your burner is seeing on the disc. You can use DVD Identifier or Nero CD-DVD Speed to grab the MID (Media ID).

Yep, you have the genuine Verbatim 16x DVD+R media.
It looks like you've got an older drive with a firmware that was released before 16x Verbatim media was out.

According to RPC1.org, you do have the lastest firmware for the "Teac" model, and the drive is based on the OEM Liteon SOHW-812S.

I would suggest that you investigate the following two possibilities.

1) Crossflash your drive to a "real" LiteOn SOHW-812S firmware and then update to the lastest version (which will almost certainly support MCC004 at 8x).

OR

2) Investigate MediaCodeSpeedEdit Tool from ala42 to see if it is possible to patch your Teac Firmware to enable 8x writing on MCC004. You might have to ask him specifically to add support for this drive...

ad 1) I have seen this option. Even going to the DL Liteon SOHW-832S. I think I will try this option first...

ad 2) I am prolly too n00b for this. :oops: Will try only if the first option fails...

It worked!!! =D>

The MCC 004s are now recognized and I can burn at 8x speed on them!

The writing speed curve, however, differs from the real SOHW-812S (please see the attached pictures), my 'fake' 812S being a little slower in writing a full DVD... prolly just have to live with that... ;)

Congrats! Glad to see you got it working at 8x. =D>

Actually, if you notice the first dip in writing speed in the graph for your "fake" drive, you'll notice that it coincides with the first jump that happened in the first graph above that was done on a "real" 812s.

I take this to mean that your drive tried to jump up to the next speed level, but it felt it would get a better burn continuing at the current speed for the moment, which is why it took a bit longer in total burn time.

I'm sure you'll get some burns on MCC004 that look exactly like the first graph, but on your drive.
