CDRLabs DVD Writer Poll - April

Postby Ian on Thu Apr 05, 2007 3:07 pm

Vote for what you think is the best, all around DVD writer. By doing so, you'll hopefully help those looking to buy a new drive. Once again, I tried to chose original drive designs that are currently available or will be soon.

Feel free to leave comments and an explanation as to why you voted the way you did. Also, if there's a drive you'd like to see added to the poll, let me know.

For reference, here's the top drives from March's poll:
1. Pioneer DVR-111/A11
2. LG GSA-H42N/L
3. Pioneer DVR-112/DVR-212/DVR-A12
4. (tied) Lite-On LH-20A1H/LH-20A1P/LH-20A1S, LG GSA-H22N/L and Plextor PX-760A/SA

Not a lot of changes this month. I removed the LG GSA-H30N/L and added the LG GSA-H55N/L.

Voted for the LiteOn LH-20A1P (and siblings).

Good DVD reading and scanning, good for copying protected Audio CDs, better DVD burn quality at high speeds than my 165P6S. Not impressive as a CD-R burner however.

My second and third choice would have been the LiteOn SHM-165P6S and the Pioneer DVR-111.

I don't vote for drives that I haven't tested personally.
Pioneer DVR-112L, LiteOn SHM-165P6S, Pioneer DVR-111L, BenQ DW1655, Plextor PX-760A
LiteOn LH-20A1P, Optiarc AD-7203A, Matshita UJ-840S, Sony RDR-HX910, Sony RDR-HX750

Pioneer DVR-111 for me. I really need to buy a few more drives to get opinions on them.... but it's getting really hard to care about new drives. They don't come with almost any new features, and they are coming out so quickly it's impossible to even form a rounded opinion of them before you need to buy the next one.

I just don't see my current combo of drives being improved much:
BenQ DW1640
Pioneer DVR-111
Plextor PX-716SA
Lite-On SHW-1635S
LG GSA-H22L
Lite-On SH-16A7L (I'll probably switch this out for an SATA Samsung at some point though)
NEC ND-2500A (external Verbatim drive)
(yes that's all in/on one PC with no extra controller cards)

My second PC has my secondary drives:
BenQ DW1620
BenQ DW1650
Pioneer DVR-110
Plextor Premium (yes a real CD Burner!)
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

New favorite is the Pioneer 112D, knocking the LG 22N down a notch for it's excellent dual layer (Verbatim) abilities. It's inability to change booktype on DVD5 +R's is it's only week point. I didn't have good luck with my 111D after changing it to a 111L, so I'm not going to do it with the 112D.
