High-Def Movie Sales Ending 1/20/08 - Blu-ray Wins Again

Postby Ian on Fri Jan 25, 2008 2:26 pm

For the week ending 1/13/08 we saw Blu-ray dominate the high-def market thanks in part to Warner's announcement. Home Media Magazine has now posted the sales for the week ending 1/20/08. While HD DVD sales were up 2%, Blu-ray dominated again with 83% of total sales.

Some people have pointed out that there were no "buy one, get one" promotions this week, so this may be a good indicator of the way things are going to be.

Only a small one. Because Blu Ray hardware is outselling HD-DVD completely. Which means over time the difference will become larger and larger !

I'm still waiting to see the sales numbers for the end of January. While I'm not expecting HD DVD to pull off a win, NPD is claiming that Blu-ray's success in early January was due to the free player promotions that Sony, Panasonic and others were offering.

That still doesn't explain on it's own the fact that HD DVD players stopped selling. The numbers were leaked out and it wasn't pretty for HD DVD.

I was simply trying to say that it wasn't all just because of some Blu-Ray players being given away with TVs.
