LG GH22 22x Super Multi Drive

LG has answered Samsung's challenge with their own 22x DVD writer. The GH22 features 22x DVD±R, 16x DVD+R DL, 12x DVD-R DL and 12x DVD-RAM writing speeds and support for LightScribe and SecurDisc. According to LG's claims, the GH22 can burn an entire DVD±R disc in 4:30. =P~

Here are some of the drive's specs:

Writing Speeds:
DVD+R: 22x
DVD+RW: 8x
DVD+R DL: 16x
DVD-R: 22x
DVD-RW: 6x
DVD-R DL: 12x
DVD-RAM: 12x
CD-R: 48x
CD-RW: 32x

Read Speeds:
DVD-ROM: 16x Max
CD-ROM: 48x Max

Buffer Size: 2MB

Hopefully a better all around burner then the S203b I have two of. They are OK, but at least mine haven't been godlike on burns for me and they have issues with DL for me as well.
Of course my h62l LG has issues with DL as well, but I think it's regular disk performance is better for me. My h22n burns dl great.

The GH22 is out in Korea. dvdrwinfo.net has a few tests. Unfortunately, they weren't able to burn at anything faster than 16x.

Any idea what media is supported at 22x? I'm surprised that TY wasn't supported at anything faster than 16x.

If TY and MCC 16x is not supported @22x, nothing is supported, I guess

16x MCC is supported @20x with my GH-20

I wish LG would concentrate more on quality (overall media compatibility) and less on speed, but I guess it's too much to ask :)

All of my LG drives do pretty well with normal media quality wise, DL the h22n is my favorite drive right now. Their big problem is they don't update their firmware very often so the stuff that doesn't work well never gets fixed right away.
My h62l is lousy at DL media, most of the time it crashes at the layer break so I don't use it for DL anymore.
I notice they are quite a bit more proactive about their Blu writer/ everything drive...Lets hope they pick it up with the newest burner here.

LG does ok on certain brand name media, but it's overall compatibility is a far cry compared to LiteOns not to mention older BenQs.

In every single test I've done, LG drives always flunk out the largest number of media, esp. not the most common ones.

That's why I don't think their compatibility is amongst the best.

And the minimal savings of 22x are hardly worth the time saved and longevity lost for most people, I'd wager.

When I take a look at my LG GH-20N, also a look to the scans from many other GH20-owner, I see that LG outperform Liteon and Samsung, also mostly other manufacturers, expect Pioneer

It´s true that some LGs, mostly Panasonic-chipset-based, are not that great but Renesas-LGs are very good

The GH22L is definitely a fast drive. At 22x, the times are right around 4:20.

The writing quality is excellent with Verbatim's DVD+R media. Unfortunately, it wasn't nearly as good with their DVD-R discs. :cry:

Is this drive a SATA or IDE version?
I find when using the JMicron IDE controller on 965P series boards I'm limited to about 18x data transfer rate; the buffers jump up and down near the very end when burning at 20x.
If it is IDE, which controller are you using?
