Is my Sony DRU-710A dying?

Postby btiger on Sun Jun 08, 2008 2:57 pm

My 3.5 yrs old Sony DRU-710A suddenly wouldn't burn any CDRs, but no problems whatsoever with burning DVRs or RW-DVRs.......how come? I used to be able to burn Fuji CDRs (MIJ) and Sony's own CDRs but now the burn would go thru/no error message but the CDRs would always be "blank" after burnt.

How long is the lifespan of a DVD writer?

Basic info:
- 3.5 yrs old Sony DRU-710A
- 97% burning DVRs and RW-DVRS
- 3% burning CDRs
- burnt about 475 DVRs/RW-DVRs so far
- burnt about 50 CDRs so far
- using Nero 6.6.1.15

Thanks in advance.

2 lasers, one for CD and one for DVD

The lifespan? Impossible to say this, some writers die after some weeks, others works nice for years
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

You got 3.5 years out of your drive? I gotta say that I'm impressed. Even 3-4 years ago, drives weren't being manufactured to last very long. To cut costs, they made them as cheap as possible.

Well, I only paid like $65 back in Nov 04 for the Sony 710A  ...I'm more than contended with the drive :D. If these drives were cheaply made back in 04, how about the current drives on the market now? cause the Pioneer 212D/215DBK and Samsung SH-S203B are selling less than $25 in my area :D. Hmmmm my gosh, these $25 new drives will probably be dead after only like 6 mths then? :-s

Hard drive prices and dropping like crazy here, 750GB Samsung are selling for $89/750GB Seagate $109 and flash drive are going for like 8GB/$19.99 or less......I'm wondering if the CD/DVD burning will be a thing of the past soon  ....

Regards.
