Using Memorex DL for storage only?

Postby X-Nemesis on Sat Nov 08, 2008 1:36 pm

Are these discs simply good for only throwing out or are they good enough to use for storing divx/xvid encodes? How long will they stay useable after storage...only a few years or longer?

I wouldn't use any DL media for long term storage. If I was forced to, I'd use Verbatim.

Memorex's 2.4x DL media was utter garbage. I don't think I ever burned a disc that didn't have readability issues. Their 8x DL discs are a lot better though. I use em for the occational movie or game, but I still wouldn't trust them for long term storage.

My LG h20n seemed to be able to burn the crappy media codes those Memorex's use pretty well, my others don't. I wouldn't trust em for long term either.
The Pioneer/NEC burners might do OK with them as well.

Here's a 2.4x Memorex DL disc I burned 2.5 years ago. It doesn't look too bad to me. RITEK D01.

Although I had to burn it with a drive different from the 1640, as it was cutting out on the 2nd layer sometimes. I either used a 3500A or a GSA-H10N, I can't remember.
