Buffer protection "Alphabet soup"

Postby scottm on Sun Dec 01, 2002 4:10 pm

In checking out all the drives, there are several different names for buffer overrun. The question is, what makes to they refer to? Here's what I think I know:

(orig) Burn-Proof=Sanyo
Smart-Burn=LiteOn
Just-Link=Ricoh
Power-Burn=Sony/LiteOn
Super-Link=LG?

However, The 48x Samsung is "Exact-Link"....who makes that? Is there any advantage to it? Ian...did you ever get a drive to review? Can someone tell me if it supports UDMA 33?

Ian...I picked up Samsung's older 32-10-40 drive for $30 from CompUSA closeout. I do remember you liked that drive...

ExacLink is the buffer underrun protection built into Oaka Technology chipsets. Some of the drives from Yamaha, Mitsumi and Cyberdrive have used it.

I have contacted Samsung, but haven't heard back from them. I'd like to check out this drive, along with their new combo drive.

I've seen the box in the store and it says it supports UDMA 2 aka UDMA 33.

Plextor also uses Sanyo's Burn-Proof Buffer Protection.
