Memorex 52/24/52 burner

Postby dbreaux on Sat Dec 14, 2002 2:41 pm

A couple of months ago I read a few postings and a news article re: this burner. but I've seen nothing of it since then. It's almost as if the visitors to your site consider Memorex a subpar brand (except for their CDR/CDRW media). I went out on a limb and picked one up at Sam's Club for 68 bucks (no rebates necessary). I use my burner for one thing and one thing only.....to burn cd's. At 52X using Nero I successfully copied 693 mb of data, files and folders containing files, in 3:01 minutes, and unlike most of the reviews I read re: fast burners it was very quiet. Media used was Verbatim 48x 80 min. Any other experiences with this particular burner, good or bad?

dear dbreaux Memorex does not produce any CD/RW drives .
They sell only OEM Lite-On CD-RW bought from Lite-ON and they call them Memorex CD/RW drives .
Most of ( or all ) the cd/dvd medias they sell are produced by other manufacturers .
I don' t know if companies like memorex , traxdata or cendyne produce something by themselves or if they are only resellers .

Memorex CD-RW drives made by Lite-On are exceptional drives and perform very well.

Memorex's 48x and 52x drives are both made by Lite-On.

I'm another happy Memorex/LiteOn owner in these forums. I have the 42x24x48, and it is fast and quiet. Like dhc014, I bought it because it is actually a LiteOn.

I guess it is pretty clear we aren't ignoring Memorex and don't consider it to be a sub-par brand. We just all know that Memorex is actually LiteOn. But thanks for bringing it up for those who aren't aware.

Speaking of OEM Lite-ON drives, could all of you with them read this please?

Ian had a good "mini-preview" sticky thread here a while ago with his Memorex 52maxx drive. I'm not sure when that became un-sticky, because I can't find it anymore.

The drive was the very first to come out with the Lite On 52x24x52x drive in OEM format. Which generated quite a buzz here.

Eliminator also bought it. But I havn't seen many posts from him in the past 2 months or so. Elim: are you still out there using that Memorex drive?

Lite-on?

Postby dbreaux on Sat Dec 14, 2002 9:39 pm

What's really strange is that my Memorex shows up in Windows as well as boot sequence as just that: MEMOREX 52 Maxx and not Lite-On. How do they pull off that trick? My sis owns a BusLink burner that is actually Lite-on and appears as such in both previously mentioned instances.

Memorex uses their own firmware so that it shows up as a Memorex drive under windows, nero, and etc.

This is true. However, let me add a little extra information. I compared the Memorex firmware to the LiteOn firmware (at the binary level) and the only difference is the identifier information (i.e. the string that says "Memorex" instead of "LiteOn"). This is in contrast to some other LiteOn-based designs, such as Sony, that actually have real firmware differences that give the drives slightly different capabilities.

And this is probably why Sony so rarely releases new firmwares and also why the CRX210E1 doesn't support Mt. Rainier. If you buy a Sonyand have problems, flash it to a Lite-ON.

Does the firmware for the TDK drive give any different capabilities than the Lite-On LTR-48246S?

I'm not entirely sure, since I haven't checked personally. In general the TDK is closer to the LiteOn - Mt. Rainier, CAV rewriting, etc. They seem to be the same at the macro level, but there might be some minor differences. dhc014 probably knows better - he's a firmware expert.

Hooray! I just recently got the binaries for the 48x16/24x48 TDK drive so I really don't know of anything different. TDK does do some customizing at least for the newer 52x24x48 drive since it is a Lite-ON and the Lite-ON is 52x24x52. I don't think that TDK changes much.
