New AOpen CRW4850

Postby mbourd25 on Thu Jan 01, 1970 5:01 am

Has someone seen or purchased this drive? It's the new AOpen CRW4850 which is rated at 48x-12x-50x writing and reading capabilities.

Also, has someone seen a review of this drive?

Any info would be great.

AOpen drives are readily available in my part of the world, so this model is sure to arrive here soon. I wonder if I should get one... RW speeds aren't anything special though. :-?

Small review:

Write
Verbatim 24x: 24x CAV
Sentinel 32x (Taiyo Yuden): 24x CAV
Memorex 40x (unknown): 24x CAV
Yamaha 24x (Taiyo Yuden): 24x CAV
NewAction 40x (Multi Media & Machinery=total crap): 24x CAV
Plasmon 100Min UltraCapacity: 24x CAV

That's 10-24x CAV, only 18x average :(

TDK 24x (Ritek): 40x P-CAV
Princo 8x: 40x P-CAV

You've got to love those Princo's :)

DAE
22-50x (37.5x average)
You actually have to press the eject button to INcrease the speed from 40x to 50x.

CD-RW
22-50x

Read speed settings: 2,4,6,8,10,12,20,32,40,50x
Write speed settings: 8,12,24,32,40,48x

2MB buffer
No Mount Rainer

Nice drive, but would be much nicer if it supported UltraSpeed CD-RW.

very true - that would be much better than increasing only write/read speeds..

I got this drive not too long ago. I can't get it too flash to version 1.01. It gives me an error but you really can't read the error message. I checked today and Aopen released a new frimware. I'll try flashing it when I get off work. BTW the drive has worked very good in teh meantime.

It flashed with no problems this time. Worked flawlessly. I'm happy with this little screamer. :D

Aopen 48x12x50x

Postby Larry on Sat Jan 18, 2003 6:29 pm

I've bought this drive a few months ago. I've had no problems with it, and can overburn with 99min (870mb) cds. A large review is here:

Well I have one here, and it appears to be one of the most media-compatible 48x drives I've come across -- FAR better than LiteOn!!!!

Some brief results

Memorex 16x (Ritek) 48x
Intenso 16x (Prodisc) 40x* (48x fine Justspeed disabled)
Discrite 32x (MBI) 48x*
Precision 24x (Ritek) 48x
Datasafe 16x (Princo) 40x*
DataOn 12x (Fornet/4M) 24x (40x fine JustSpeed disabled)

* These discs also write at high speed on the LiteOn 48x but the burns either crash out half-way through, give high C1/2 error counts or the burn slows half-way in. No such trouble with the Aopen -- in fact it's the ONLY drive I've come across capable of writing the Discrite media at above 32x -- drives from Cyberdrive, LiteOn, MSI, Asus, Yamaha and Plextor all give trouble at 40x/48x with these discs. Not so the Aopen -- average C1 error rate at 48x write is around 1.2, maxing at around 15-20. A superb result.

IMO my particular 4850 is the best drive I've ever owned!!! It's power hungry though, my 200W PSU couldn't keep up with it with two other CDRWs hooked up at the same time.....
