the CRX215A1/E1 is an OEM LTR-48246S and can be converted into a LTR-52246S. Save some money and get that one.

Unclear antecedent - to which drive are you referring when you say "get that one"? :wink:

I would get either the Sony or the LiteOn. As noted by vbl117 and dhc014, the Sony and LiteOn are equivalent drives. Thus, the decision between them rests on their prices and bundled software.

If you don't care about the bundled software, then simply get whichever one you can purchase for less money.

If you do care about the bundled software, then you have to factor into the cost of the drive that comes without your desired software the cost to you (if any) of separately buying the software you do want.

The Sony comes with B's Recorder Gold. The LiteOn comes with Nero. (Both statements assuming you aren't purchasing a bare drive and based upon what ships in America.)

The Sony CRX215A1 since it can be upgraded to a Lite-On 52x24x52.

I guess I'm the only one who is slow on the uptake... :oops:

Oh well, thanks to you and dhc014 for clarifying, even if I was the only one who was confused.

Yeah, I know. We curmudgeons have our slow days...

In my defense, I will try to claim that Sony drives are typically more expensive than their equivalent original LiteOns and sometimes even more expensive than later model original LiteOns (I guess you are paying for the "Sony" brand). For example, googlegear.com has the CRX210E1 (an older and presumably cheaper model than the CRX215) bare drive package listed for $60, $1.50 more than the LiteOn LTR-52246S retail package with Nero at $58.50:

http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ProductLi ... ode=010203

So when you said "Save some money and get that one" I assumed you meant "Get the LiteOn", which seemed to be at odds with the rest of your statement, leading to at least part of my confusion.

Anyone buying any of this?? Maybe I should just trundle off to my nap... :D

OK, here is my advice now;

Get the whichever is cheaper between the CRX215, and the LTR-52246S.

Go for the Lite On 52246S or 48246S. They are the same drive, with different firmware. The 48246S will run you about 3200-3300 rupees here in Bombay.

I was thinking that cfitz. Generally the Sony drives attract a price premium of between 10 and 30 per cent over their LiteOn equivalent, for a drive with inferior support and bundled software (that B's software is NASTY compared with Nero). Definitely not worth paying for the name in this instance.

If the Sony is cheaper than the LiteOn AND you don't need a copy of Nero buy the Sony. Otherwise buy the LiteOn.

Poor Samsung drive, not getting a recommendation :lol: in its defence Samsung drives are very well built and if you are going to give the drive a good hammering (like 50-100 CDs a day or more) you might want to consider the Samsung as I suspect after a year or two it may be in better shape....
