Is that Cendyne DVD-R/RW drive based on the Pioneer A05?

More Staples deals from 2/16 through 2/22:

Optimum 50-pack 48x CD-R: FREE after $10 MIR
Based on the packaging, there is a good chance these are CMC discs.

Sony 30-pack CD-R audio: $2.94 after $11 MIR
You can use these as regular data discs as well, and while I normally don't recommend paying extra for audio CD-R discs (see here), these are cheap enough that you might want to get them even though they are audio discs.

I haven't seen it, but making an educated guess I would say yes, it is a LITE-ON, since they are the only drives with SMART-burn. Also check the actual model number on the box and see if it starts with LTR.

That is the coupon. Press the "Enter Coupons" button on the checkout page, and type the number 79473 into the coupon box when ordering online.

Just stopped by the local Staples...the CDRW drives they have in THIS store are NOT Liteon...they are Justlink...bummer. Seems like Liteon is less and less of a presence in the retail stores. The Cendyne I got at OfficeMax a few weeks ago (which had a LTR part # on the box) was actually an AOPen drive...

Scanner

Postby Kantos Kan on Sun Feb 16, 2003 12:14 am

Anybody have any comments on the Memorex scanner that's $14.94 after rebate? My old UMAX died years ago and I have never needed to replace it, but for $15 I might buy one.

I got that same scanner as a Christmas present. So far I like it and its an upgrade over my old Visioneer 5300 scanner that I had. One nice feature about this scanner is that it doesn't need an external power supply like how many older USB devices did. A 6' USB cable does come with the scanner though. The Memorex Mem 48u scanner is based on the Artec 48u scanner. The specs can be checked out here:
http://64.70.234.121/pages/e%2B_48u.htm

For $15, I would get as its a good deal for the money. If your in need of a scanner for typical scans, then this scanner is for you. However, if you use a scanner on a daily basis for graphical work, I would suggest getting a more feature filled scanner.

Thanks, Buddha, for the info. I just snagged one of the scanners at Staples.

I looked over the Buslink CD-RW's, none of them were SmartBurn models.

Is this some trend? Why are Lite-On's disappearing from the shelves? A manufacturing bottleneck?

Let's hope not!

BUSlink 52x24x52 CD-RW drive is sold out at staples.com. However, they are substituting Pacific Digital 52x24x52x Internal CD-RW drives for it. But I doubt you'll get any of the discounts with the Pacific Digital drive.

I checked two local Staples stores and they both had the BUSlink drives with "Just-Link" on the box. The image on thier web site shows "SMART-Burn" on the box, I wonder what they will be shipping?

Best Buy has a BUSlink 48x CD-RW for $20 after rebate, but after visting the store, it also says "Just-link" on the box.

CompUSA has the BUSlink 52x24x52x for $40 after rebate, and it says "SMART-Burn" on the box, and is indeed a Lite-On LTR-52246S.

OfficeMax has a Verbatim 48x12x48x (really a 48x24x48x) for $10 after rebate. I think it is a BenQ since the model number is 4824P, and it has the two buttons on the front (play/skip and stop/eject).

Brought one from local staples (indy), it says "Smart Burn" on the box and recognized as an Lite-On 52246S. I tried to order online but it was out of stock, did not even let me put in shopping cart, there were, however, a few boxes on display in the local store so I picked one up in the store ($20 not bad for a 52X CDRW).

There was a post in alt.comp.periphs.cdr from someone that bought some of the Staples Optimum 48X CDR's that Nero reported them as Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi = Verbatim, making these discs, with their very low price, likely to be Verbatim ValueLife discs or their equivalent, which are known to be manufactured by CMC using CMC processes. Note that these are not the same quality as Verbatim DataLife discs, which, while some are also suspected to be manufactured in CMC plants, use a different process that includes Mitsubishi's patented Super AZO dye.

I suspect by now the distinction is moot, since all of these likely sold out long before today. But the information might be useful for future purposes.
