installing CenDyne (Lite-On) CD-RW on Win 98 machine

Post subject: installing CenDyne (Lite-On) CD-RW on Windows 98 machine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The OS is not SE; the date I find is 5.11.98. Existing non-functional cd drive(no RW) driver file is internal MS (mscdrom.inf; also mscdrom.pnf dated 2.4.1999; no mention of CenDyne in either file. Lite-On is mentioned, and is the maker of the busted drive and likely the new CenDyne RW).

Model is LTR-52246S, apparently a Lite-On unit. (I don't want to open the box without some confidence that I can make it work.)

System requirements on box reference Windows 98, not 98 SE, which some online versions mention and many others do. CenDyne website requirements don't mention Windows 98 at all.

The CenDyne website has an ASPI Updater driver. Might this be what I need? Will I be able to get a write driver for the unit from CenDyne (52X24X52X) or MS or Lite-On, or is this likely not a workable deal?

Thanks.

If it is really a LTR-52246S, then it is a LiteOn. And you shouldn't have any trouble installing it on Windows 98. Memorex, who sells the same drive under their own name, lists requirements as Windows 95/98/2000/NT 4.0/ME/XP, Pentium 166 or higher.

There shouldn't be any need to install ASPI. Just physically install the drive and the included burning software.

So...the drive will read OK once cabled (installed), and at that point I can install the burn, etc. software from the supplied CD? The only cd drive in the system is kaput.

Yep. Should be no problem. Just make sure to set the master/slave jumpers correctly.
