CD drive not recognizing CD-RW's.

Burn baby burn!

CD drive not recognizing CD-RW's.

Postby bird30 on Fri Feb 28, 2003 9:04 am

I just updated some drivers for a video card that I had installed. When I did that, it caused by TDK VELOCD burner not to recognize and cd media at all. When I put a cd rom in, it just spun and did nothing. I had IDE, AGP, and a few others drivers installed that I guess caused this little mess.
I'm running INCD as my backup program.

I had it looked at and the technician said that the cd is now fixed. However, when I put a cd-rw disk in to back up some music files, it didn't do a thing. It spun and then quit, and when I tried to get into explorer, my pc. froze. I had to reboot the p.c and eject the cd. I then unwrapped a blank unformated cd-rw, stuck it in the drive, and the INCD program recognized that to format. I didn't format it, but that's my next thing I'm gonna do.

I guess what I'm asking is this. Did the tech forget something when he fixed the Burner the first time that causes it not to read the RW disks? Do i just have a bad disk? Is my burner going out? I don't know. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would appreciate it. My burner is a TDK VELOCD 40x12x48 and less than a year old. I'm running Win 98 with a 1.3 ghz processor and 320 MB or ram.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

What happens when you put pressed CDs in the drive?

Sounds like an InCD problem. You haven't made any changes to InCD lately, have you? KCK has made a great guide to debugging InCD under Windows XP:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=9488

It isn't directly applicable to you, since you are running Windows 98, but it might give you some ideas to try. If you can't find anything that helps and KCK doesn't have anything to add, you might want to try uninstalling and then reinstalling InCD.

Unfortunately, InCD is known to often cause problems.

bird30:

Your problems could stem from InCD conflicts with the IDE, AGP and other drivers which you have just installed. So please provide as much information as you can about these drivers. What are the brands and models of the new graphic card and your motherboard?

To identify such drivers, we need information about your IOSUBSYS directory, ASPI layers, and possibly extracts from Nero log file in a format similar to that in

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... 7767#47767

First, in an MS-DOS Prompt window, type "cd c:\windows\system\iosubsys" (without quotes) and Enter, then "dir>c:\iosubsys.txt" and Enter, thus listing your IOSUBSYS directory in the file C:\iosubsys.txt. Also tell us if you have ever installed external devices on your box, such as burners, Iomega drives, etc.

Second, tell us what Nero InfoTool says about ASPI (system and Nero).

Third, look in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero for NeroHistory.log. Each session in this log file starts with the header

====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======

and is divided into paragraphs by empty lines; at the beginning of paragraph 5 you will see the date of the session (e.g., 28.2.2003). Each session is quite long, but we only need the initial info section (ending with "Wizard: Off or On") and the final "Existing drivers" section. We need these two extracts from an older session produced before your drivers changed, and from the latest session run after the changes (just simulate a burn if you don't have it).

And of course tell us about your versions of Nero and InCD, and other burning programs and plugins (e.g., from WMP).
