What is the BEST CD-ROM drive I can get on the market?

How fast is too fast?

What is the BEST CD-ROM drive I can get on the market?

Postby slimeballzz on Thu Jan 01, 1970 5:32 am

Anyone know what is the top of the line internal CD-ROM drive?
Was it Afreey? I noticed they didn't include Asus 52x CD-rom drive in the CD-rom roundup or probably there are several others missing so wondering if anyone got any clue on what the best one is?

The best CD-ROM drive I ever worked with is the LiteOn LTD163.
You can even play DVD's with this drive

I never owned an LTD-163, but the new LiteOn LTD-166S is probably just as good. You could do a lot worse than an LTD-166S! :D

well how bout just cd-rom alone? I already have a Pioneer DVD-106S but I never really ever used any dvds on it as I can just use my stand alone dvd player in my home theater.

does liteon have the best performance or best value? I'm looking towards performance and quality.... I mean it's just a cd-rom drive so it shouldn't cost a bundle.

I think it is both for LiteOn. My LiteOn LTD-166S is rated at 16X for DVD and 48X for CD-ROM, but 50X is really what it should be, judging by some of the benchmarks I've run. For a DVD-ROM it is very quick, and also pretty reasonably priced. I am not sure there is a downside to it! :D

So out of all the CD-ROM drives out there this LiteOn LTD-166S cd-rom performance would beat an Afreey 56x CD-ROM?

Well, the Afreey 56x will read mode 1 data cd's faster of course.
But the bad thing about Afreey CD-ROM drives is that their firmware is not upgradable.

Moreover, the Afreey can't read DVD's. Personally, I would trade away the small (56x vs 50x) CDROM reading advantage of the Afreey for the DVD capability and firmware upgradability of the Lite-On 16X drives any day.

what if you already had a dvd rom drive?? Would you want another dvd/cd rom combo still? and are there ever any firmware upgrades for cd-rom drives?

No, nor would I want a straight CD-ROM drive either. For me personally, one DVD-ROM and one CD-RW drive is more than sufficient.

The 163 is nice but it wont read protected audio cd's at all and it's a bit picky about scratched or badly burned media. Hopefully the 166 isn't quite as picky :)
I also use a Plextor 40 wide because it can rip protected audio cd's and is a bit less picky about stuff but it's slower at DAE. I use the 163 for most things that are clean and get good results, on bad disks or protected ones I use the Plex.
Probably for your purposes the liteon is the best bang for buck unless ya wanna do Protected audio stuff.

8) Aloha!

For the money and what it does and how it does it ASUS 52x is hard to beat! We had looked at what many of the Forum users had to say about CDROM drives and went with the CD-S520. After using it in one of our production systems, we will install it in more. It is an Awesome drive. We can say this after using just about every brand name drive out there.

I don't recommend you to buy Afreey CD-ROM drive. I had Afreey 40x drive year ago. Very noisy and bad read quality (speed was good is drive was capable to read disc). I bought CD-RW and after that I bought new CD-ROM drive for faster audio CD copying. I chose Sony CDU5211 (52x), earlier model of the 52x model that was in the test. Very silent and read quality is very good.

get an aopen drive, i have one and its ok, then again a dvd rom drive would be more bang for your buck, they are not that much more expensive and can do twice as much.

to play online you also have to update a version 1.4

here are a few good Descent sites:
