Nice deal, but it appears Maxtor also dropped the warranty to 1year for 7200RPM hard drives with 8MB cache?

I think I rather stick with Special Edition drives by Western Digital for the time being.

That is the general case for their retail packages, effective last October:

http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/servic ... glance.htm

It is a shame. Western Digital reduced the warranty on their 2 MiByte cache IDE drives to one year at the same time, but still offers a three year warrant on the Special Edition 8 MiByte cache drives.

Does anyone know if Maxtor, Western Digital or others are still trying to play the game of defining the beginning of the warranty period as the date of manufacture rather than the date of purchase?

The warranty is usually effective from the date of purchase.

Can't say what policy is for Maxtor and Western Digital in terms of date of manufacture vs date of purchase.

Interesting I browsed Western Digital's website, they offer an Extended Warranty Purchase for US customers to extend warranty from 1 yr to 3 yrs for $14.95.

http://support.wdc.com/warranty/selecti ... sttype=END

For $14.95 it may not sound a bad deal considering I usually have bad luck with Western Digital usually within the first year or just past the first year.

Edit #1:
Q: When does the warranty period start?
A: The warranty period starts from the date of purchase for retail packaged products. For all other products, the warranty period starts from the date of manufacture. Proof of purchase may be required.

Warranty Policy

Western Digital has adopted a new warranty policy effective October 1, 2002. Western Digital WD Caviar Special Edition hard drives are covered under warranty for a three-year period. All other Western Digital products will be covered under a standard warranty for a period of one year. Products purchased before October 1, 2002 are covered under the product's original warranty, unless otherwise noted on the retail packaging.

Thanks lightningbaron. Looks like that might be something extra to keep in mind when considering the purchase of an OEM or bare drive.

cfitz so does Newegg's OEM WD 8 mb of cache HDs still have a 3 year warranty ? It says they do at Newegg.com so i guess it does still.

I hate all Maxtor HDs have a 1 year warranty because the SATA Maxtor 120 gig HD with 8 mb of cache has a around a high 37000 kps end transfer rate which is really good. I know the 66 gig platter i believe it is maxtor HDs have a high 39,000 or 40,000 kps i forgot end transfer rate which is even better! Espically for video editing, apps, etc. I bet your Hard drive would never feel really slow with that kind of end transfer rate!
Any help appreicated

It doesn't hurt to call and double check, but presumably newegg is stating the warranty term accurately. And a 3-year warranty for an OEM drive is consistent with lightningbaron's report. However, if I read the policy correctly, the 3 years started when the drive was manufactured, not when you purchase the drive.

Something will always come along to make your drive (and computer) feel slow.

On the warranty topic, the WD SE still carry a 3 yrs warranty. However, given it's an OEM (bare drive, non-retail kit) through newegg.com, I think newegg.com is responsible for warranty?

$139.94 (selling price) - $54.96 (110% price gaurentee) - $20 Staples Coupon + $4.16 Colorado Sales Tax (6.4%) = $69.14

the price gaurentee was for the instant rebate, cause i work there, they just needed to price gaurentee someone
