Got better speed

Postby studiovpc on Fri Mar 21, 2003 6:37 pm

I've tested it too but I got slightly better speed 52.12x I can send you results, also your CPU usage is too high mine is always 0 1 2 5 percent even on Celeron 600MHz with 64MB SDRAM.

You are expecting too much repeatability of exact test numbers. The numbers will vary slightly from drive to drive, system to system, and even from test to test on the same system. As far as tests like these are concerned, 52.12x = 50.63x, or more sensibly, 52x = 51x (reporting these results with four significant digits of precision is silly). The difference between 52x and 51x is insignificant, and probably explained by you testing with a disc that was filled to slightly larger capacity than the 70:35 disc that omega tested with. Larger discs allow the drive to reach higher speeds due to the CAV reading characteristics.

The same goes for the CPU usage numbers. For all practical purposes, 5% = 6%. And one wouldn't expect to get the exact same numbers on different systems anyway.

Omega's drive is fine, and it sounds like yours probably is too.

The one thing i don't like about this drive is that the CAV prevents it from going at it's optimum speed right away. It starts to go faster when it's practically done burning.

Yes, that is true. But it is true for all CAV CD-RW drives, and all high-speed drives are CAV. So you couldn't have done any better in this respect by chosing any other drive.

The fastest CLV speed (which is constant across the whole disc) generally used was 16x.

omega, one note:
you should have run all test at once and posted a single screenshot that contained the results of all tests.

4 screenshots is a waste of bandwidth and give dialup users a hard time.

Dial-up users? DIAL-UP Users?!? We don't need no stinkin' dial-up users! :D

(Just a joke, people. I'm a part-time dial-up user myself. 8) )
