For $46.00 you're buying the OEM version with the 2 mb buffer. The retail version with the 8 mb buffer is $ 57.00 but at least its finally available.

Why not Lite-On 52X?

Postby mike78652 on Thu Mar 27, 2003 2:03 am

Why not just go to Best Buy this week and buy Lite-On 52X for $20 after rebates. Much better than the Samsung.

Hmm... the 8mb buffer was appealing, but you raise a good point. Does the Buslink still come with Nero?

Interestingly, they show one of their OEM versions as having the 8 mb buffer but I'll bet that's a typo. Yeah, buying a Lite-On for $ 20.00 (after rebate) is tempting but don't forget the Samsung will be much quieter.

Really? One of the things I've noticed is that some reviews of the Samsung go on about how much quieter it is and some reviews of other burners don't mention noise at all. The first review I read of a 52x burner that commented on noise was a review of the Asus unit. Maybe I need to look for one of the Lite-on clones....

So you don't think the sound(maybe) and buffer size make up for the price difference?

If so, maybe I will grab that buslink...

Ian, how do you know it's not that much quieter?
I no none of the 52X writers out there are as silent as a hush but the samsung is uttered to be noticabily quieter.

And think of this next point: We don't know if it can burn protected cds

Gendibal,

If you can still find a Buslink (Liteon LTR-52246S) at Best Buy for $19.99 after rebates (ends Saturday), yes it does come with Nero (I just bought one). It also comes with a 52x blank CDR made by Prodisc, an ATA 33 IDE cable, audio cable, screws, and a better manual (wouldn't take much) than a standard Liteon.

If you're able to find one, the box will have to say "SmartBurn" to contain a Liteon. If it doesn't have "SmartBurn" on the box, it will be another brand, probably Aopen (not desirable). The store that I went to to had both types intermixed, so you may have to sort through the boxes to find a Liteon. The store people were clueless about the difference, so don't expect help from them.

That's my plan. If it's out of stock at the local BB, I'm gonna see if I can con CompUSA into price matching. heh heh heh... 8)

Noise

Postby MediumRare on Thu Mar 27, 2003 5:27 pm

For what it's worth- the newest issue of the German computer magazine c't has a test of 52x burners. The LiteOn is average on noise (9.3 Sone). Loudest are Teac (10.7) and Artec, quietest are Mitsumi (7.5) and Aopen.

They didn't test the Samsung drive.

c't is a print magazine. Some of the articles are available online here: http://www.heise.de/ct/inhalt.shtml, but not the burner test. The detailled results were kind of surprising for me, but I'd have to prepare a bit to go into that. Don't have the time right now. :-?

Well if you think about it.. the faster drives aren't quieter, but the loudness only persists for much less time. Blah, thoughts not coming out right.
