LG - GCC4480BB or Samsung SM348B - Which Combo ?

Postby kskarthi on Tue Jan 28, 2003 11:49 am

Both the above drives are 48/24/48/16 and both are priced at $87/$90 in newegg. I saw Ian's review on SM348B but regarding the LG combo drive there are no reviews.

Does anyone have any experiences on the LG 4480 combo drive ? Which one would be a better buy ?

Me. Just got one yesterday. I think both are great. Hard to say which one is better. I haven't bought a Samsung SM-348B yet. Just waiting for a chance to get one (retail 8MB version) for something like $80. :D

Though I already have two 4x DVD writers and had nearly 20 CD writers, the LG and Samsung 48/24/48/16 combination CD-R/DVD-ROM drives will take care of most CD writing and DVD-ROM/-Video/-Audio/-R/+R/-RW/+RW reading tasks.

The drive has been on sale for some time in South Korea and it's right now naturally one of the bestselling ODD products along with Samsung SM-348B here.

And wait for Ian's GCC-4480B review. :D

I have recently picked up the 4480B 48x48x24x16 combo drive - I'm quite happy with the quality feel / noise and the burning quality but the DAE ripping and lack of region free firmware leaves something to be desired :(

Anyone else got one of these?

I've also got the LG 48/24/48/16.

I've yet to use it for burning b/c I'm saving it as a backup for my 52/24/52 LiteON.

DVD playback is great. Nice and quiet. Haven't tried DAE with it. Funny thing is that Nero reports it as being Mt. Rainier compatible when in fact it isn't.

The only thing I noticed that the spinup time was a bit slower than the older LG 32/10/40/16 drive I used to have.

The drive is specifically MT Rainer compatible - it mentions it on the box as a feature.

Really nice drive.. only negative thing is limited media compatibility (TY 48x media burns at 40x), but on the other side burning quality (better than Liteon 48246) - lower C1 errors..

What the hell are C1 errors??????? people keep talking about them, but I don't see any information.

Is it a CRC error? is the data burnt there bad, or just bad media detected and skipped so the CD is still fine?

Can anyone shed any information
!?!?

I didn't know that since I bought it OEM [no box] and it doesn't even mention Mt. Rainier on the website:
http://www.lgeus.com/Product/CD/GCC_4480B.asp

I just looked at the manual and you're right, it does support Mt. Rainier.

Funny thing is that Nero did report my previous LG 32/10/40/16 as being Mt. Rainier compatible so I thought it was just a glitch.

Thanks for the update.

So is anyone else having trouble with REALLY bad DAE with the drive?

Originally I thought it rocked, but I've come to the conclusion it actually sucks balls :( :( really bad.

Also what the heck is C1?

With new firmware 1.02 DAE in Nero CD Speed goes to 40x CAV, with DAE Quality 10 and Accurate Stream.. in Exact Audio Copy I got 12x average speed in secure mode - tested on pressed audio CD 73 min.

I'm also interested in these two drives (one of them will go into my wife's Mac).

Can anybody test LG's:

- ability to read scratched CDs ?
- burn quality (C1/C2 errors) ?

I'm interested in it's quality of writing and stability of reading.

The Samsung combo seems to excel in these two areas, but it has a front panel extrusion that makes it harder to install inside a Mac drive slot (with the front panel of the case).

Ian said he's working on a review of the LG. Let's hope CEBIT didn't provide too much of a distraction for him.
