What's the difference between PPGA and FCPGA?

What is the difference between PPGA and FCPGA Socket 370 CPUs? Can I put an FCPGA CPU in a motherboard that was released when all Socket 370 CPUs were PPGA without using an adapter? Thanks in advance for your help!

FC-PGA:500-1000mhz PIII/Celeron "Coppermine"
FC-PGA2:1100-1400mhz PIII/Celeron "Tualitin"

You can use a Coppermine in a FC-PGA2 socket but not the other way around.Those adapters are around $60USD but you can get a FCPGA-2 motherboard for the same price.

Are you sure that adapters cost this price in your country ? I can have adapters for 6 euro in my country and i buy them from my local retailer .

FCPGA->Slot 1 cost around the amount you mentioned.

Adapters that convert from different FCPGA arrays range from $25-100 US. Some are fancier than others and include a heatsink, CPU even etc...

Also, then it comes to the CPU, I tend to avoid the generic products. FYI Asus makes a great adapter. Tough to find in the US though.


Back to the original question...

The difference between PPGA and FCPGA lie in the chip packaging and pin layout. Also, FCPGA runs cooler than PPGA.

To correct what was mentioned above... pin layout is the same between FCPGA and FCPGA2. The difference is in the packaging. FCPGA2 includes a heatspreader.

So I would have to get some type of adapter to put an FCPGA processor in my PPGA motherboard. :cry: Is this correct? I have the SiS 620 chipset, and I know that my motherboard supports 100MHz FSB. I have 100MHz capable RAM (512 MB total), so that shouldn't be a problem.

Tazdevl, do you know if (and where) I could get an adapter to put an FCPGA2 Tualatin processor in my board? Thank you all for giving me so much helpful info!
