There appears to be a dearth of user feedback, reviews, and general information for the Optorite drives. Since this is a relatively new company, the drives may be OK, or not.

Unless you are the type of person who would buy a pig in a poke, I would not recommend that you buy this drive without reliable information.

I could comfortably recommend a Liteon drive of the same speed rating and be confident that you would get a quality product at a reasonable price.

I have an optorite CW-5205 52x24x52x with fw 150C from february this year.

My findings:

Positive:
-Quiet operation
-full 24X CD-RW speed
-Low amount of c1 and c2 errors on many media types.
-Works well with CloneCD and similar programs.
-Good read performance.
-High average writespeed. 40,04X on 80min media.

Negative:
-Requires good media to write at 52X
-With some types of low quality media(and old media), the write process will often fail.
-Use longer time to write discs compared to other 52X writers (due to longer calibration processes).

Read cdrlabs review of the msi 52x24x52x which is the same drive.

I would recommend a Lite-On over this drive.

Read problems with XP?

Postby Schattenjager on Thu Apr 24, 2003 9:45 am

I just installed one of these 52x24x52 drives and the blasted thing won't read the first CD now. It didn't have a problem when I was using it to install XP Pro but now nothing. The system sees it. Even labeled right in the hardware manager. I've even flashed it, just in case. Still nothing....
:( Seems like a good drive, can anyone help or have similar problems?

AMD Athlon 1.3
512 DDR
WinXP Pro SP1
Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra
It's never that bad. Just think, it could ALWAYS get worse.
