In House Review - Lite-On LXR-40243A 40/24/40 USB 2.0 CD-RW

Today we shift gears a little and take a look at one of Lite-On's new external writers. The LXR-40243A can read and write at 40x, rewrite at 24x and rip audio CD's at 40x without even breaking a sweat. Along with an attractive external case and ultra fast USB 2.0 interface, the LXR-40243A also has features like Lite-On's own Smart-Burn and Smart-X technologies to prevent coasters and determine the best speeds for the media. While this list of features is impressive, I'm sure the question on most of minds is how does it perform? To find out, you'll have to check out the review.

Finally a Lite-On with some style. 8)

Ian, according to your scale the overall score for the drive should be 10.

I weighted the installation score much lower than performance. If a drive is impossible to install but once it works it totally screams, should it be scored poorly? I flipped that around to say that OF COURSE USB2.0 is easy to install and therefore irrelevent, so it came down to features and performance. The scoring just gives us a way to put a rating in numerical form. Based on the history of scoring drives at cdrlabs.com (how many drives score less than 5? is the real scale then 5-10?), I felt it was an excellent drive but because it was a few seconds slower than some similar drives I needed to show that.

Sorry Boone, didn't notice the review is yours.

I'm just wondering: the drive is scored 10/10 when you move your mouse pointer to the upper left on the "Lite-On LXR-40243A 40/24/40 USB 2.0 CD-RW" below the "Recent Reviews" title on the main page. But in the Conclusion the overall score is 9... :o

Yeah, that value is taken from an average of the three scores instead of the overall score that was manually set by the reviewer. I thought that code was updated, but I guess not.
