Hi guys, I've a difficult choice in picking one of the cd writers:

LiteOn LTR-52246S and Samsung SW-252B

both seems like a good quality drive, while some ppl suggested that the LiteOn can crack more cd-protections, some ppl prefer the Samsung one due to the fact that it got 8MB buffers (is such a big buffer really important?) plus a overall nice quality.

what do u guys think?

The Buffer size is meaningless with current buffer-under-run protections.
The Samsungs are not producing the same high-quality burns as the LiteOns, and the LiteOn has earned a reputation for being compatable with a wider range of media than any other drive. If I'm not mistaken, the Aopen drives are based on the Samsung drive, and a few others as well.

I have the Lite-On LTR52246S and I'm very happy with it.It was a Buslink package and was on sale for $30US and it has performed flawlessly.
I agree with rdgrimes,large buffers(>2MB) are not needed with buffer underrun protection.

The 2-mb buffer shouldn't be a problem. For the reasons mentioned by rdgrimes and Inertia, I would recommend the LTR-52246S.

rdgrimes: I thought that current AOpen drives use Ricoh chipsets and that current Samsungs use MTK ones. Please let me know if I am wrong, though.

I was making an assumption based on the use of Justlink in the Aopen drives. I could be wrong.

The SM-352B, which is the cdrw/dvd combo drive uses Superlink and MTK chipsets.

The SW-252B which is the 52/24/52 cdrw writer is a Ricoh based drive and uses Justlink.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought they all used MTK chipsets. I guess I was wrong.

I've just bought the LiteOn drive, but got a question:

While I am trying to test burning a game (Starwars Jedi Outcast), I was told by NeroBurn that I could only burn with 24x, due to "speed of source data is too slow". I just wonder why is that?

The cd writer is 52/24/52x, my cpu is 2.4Ghz, Maxtor 7,200phm 8Mb Harddisk, how can the source be too slow?

You're burning from the HD? Or are you copying a CD?
If the data is composed of lots of small files, even the fastest HD can slow down to read them. The feature designed to cope with that situation is "cache files smaller than ..." located on the misc tab in the burn dialog. First I would shut off the "determine max speed" function in Nero and see if it really burns that slowly.
