Burn baby burn!

hard drive backup

Postby bizwebpage on Tue May 27, 2003 11:29 am

Using Pacific Digital USB 2.0 burner - Win98SE - 500meg memory.

Always the burn begins but hangs up somewhere between 20-30% and also locks up the machine.

Tried numerous applications to backup hard drive including latest version of Nero.

Anyone with similiar problems and know of a fix?

Supply us with somemore information please:

1. How exactly are you backing up your hard drive onto CD? Did you compress everything into an ISO and are trying to burn that or are you using another method?

2. Have you been able to burn other data successfully with your current setup?

3. Have you tried using different blank media? Sometimes many problems can be blamed on media incompatibility.

1. I've tried creating both methods:
create a test image and compressed ISO.
Closed all background applications that were running.
A compressed ISO was saved on another hard drive partition and apparently was successful. I only attempted to backup main hard drive partition.

Always the same result. Hangs at 20-30% and locks up machine.

2. Reinstalled software numerous times - update software -
Nero Burning version 5.5.10.28.
Also tried other applications and got the same result.

3. Yes, data and CD to CD copies work fine.

4. CD's are 48X 700MB 80 minute Memorex
I even tried setting CD storage limit for 600MB and 40X

Since another ISO was successful, it leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the ISO you created for the main partition backup. What exactly is compressed in the main partition backup ISO and how does its contents differ from the successful ISO on the other partition?

I created an ISO for the main partition......... only one.
There was no other ISO.
I tried to burn it to a CD.... burned 20+%, stopped writing and locked up.

I then copied it to another partition.
When I then tried to burn this onto a CD.... it burned 20+% stopped writing and locked up the machine.

Nero has a function called "HD Backup".... I used that function.
I've also used other software with the exact same results.

What are the exact conents of the ISO you created?

I have not used Nero's "Backup HD" option, therefore I cannot vouch for it. My other advice would be to search the Ahead Software Forum for an answer on the "Backup HD" problem.

Might this be a problem with transferring large files on the USB? As a test, what about installing the drive IDE and trying it?
