TEAC DW-548D 48/24/48/16 CD-RW/DVD-ROM

Postby Ian on Tue Jun 10, 2003 6:40 pm

New combo drive from TEAC...

Writing Speeds:
CD-R: 48x Max (CAV)
CD-RW: 24x Max (CAV)

Read Speeds:
DVD-ROM: 16x Max (CAV)
CD-ROM: 48x Max (CAV)

Access Time:
DVD-ROM: 140ms
CD-ROM: 120ms

Buffer Size: 2MB

Also supports some sort of buffer underrun protection and EasyWrite (Mt. Rainier). Any bets on whether or not its based on someone elses' design or one of TEAC's own?

I'd bet that the 48/24/48/16 is not it's own design, but a Lite-ON or a Samsung. Time (or pictures ;)) will tell.

The "original" Teacs always had much quicker access times (typically about 85ms)....as do the DV-516E and the CD-W540E.

The 540 is the last original-Teac-Writer.

My info about the DV 516 is, that´s a rebadged Pioneer-drive

No, not yet. TEAC said they'll have some in a couple weeks.

Hello!

I´m sure, you bring a photo on the CDR-Labs-news, when it was avaible, Ian :) ?

I hope that dhc014 is wrong and it´s not a LiteOn or Samsung-drive. There are two many OEM-drives on the market

I don't think so, the DV-516E looks/acts/feels like the 540E...where did you get your info that it's a Pioneer?

DV-516E is a rebadged Pioneer, definitely. Just look at both drives. TEAC decided to use Pioneer's drives for DVD reading/recording. They only tweak the firmware a little...

I don´t think that the 540 acts/feel liek the DV 516.

I had the info from a friend, who´s knows almost everything about OEM/rebadged drives:

http://www.brennmeister.com/forum/viewt ... forum=5&19

There´s his list about CD-RW-drives
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Do you have a link, and which Pioneer model is it supposed to be?

I'm surprised, because the 516E opens very forcefully, JUST LIKE my other 2 Teacs. No other drive I've seen opens like the Teacs.

I have a Pioneer DVR-105, which is completely different and doesn't open anything like the Teacs.

Another thing: the 516E took a half hour to copy a protected audio CD...and with Nero the 516E would NOT rip an individual track from this CD at all. All in all the drive acted very much like my 540E doing this job.

But the DVR-105 went through it like butter, fast and smooth, single track as well as whole CD.

Does this sound like they're made by the same company?

BTW, the 516E reads at 48x, the Pioneer models from 117 all the way through to 120 read at 40X....or do you think the speed issue is firmware-related?

The man i had the info had the Pioneer DV 117 and the Teac DV 516.

They had different firmware and the Teac is in all things faster as the Pioneer by reading with CloneCD; and the Teac can read subchannel data, the Pioneer not

There are also rebadged Pioneer from Benq and AOpen, they had 48x read speed at CD-R, too.
