Great price on an NEC ND-1100A clone. You can't even get an OEM ND-1100A for this cheap.

No rebate either. :D

Let us know how you like it. It's a good thing that DVD writers are coming down in price!

I got mine today!

Postby legalalien on Tue Jun 24, 2003 7:39 pm

I received my order from TigerDirect today. The drive came in plain packaging, with no cables, manuals, or blank media. Nothing to suggest it's an IOMEGA drive; the bezel is generic, with DVD and CD RW logos. There's an NEC label (serial number, FCC logo, etc.) on top. A CD with Nero 5.5 software is included - Nero, Nero Vision Express, InCD, and MediaPlayer.

I wonder who I need to turn to if the drive needs service...

Good question.

Quick Install Guide: http://download.iomega.com/english/manu ... 6100_e.pdf

Mine should be arriving in the next day or two.
Right around the same time as my next child.

Guess what? No DVD Player is included, and I don't already have one.

Any suggestions for a good (free, if possible) DVD Player?

I got my order today.

I was surprised to find only the Nero disc and no player as well. But I guess that's how they keep the price down.

Luckily, I had PowerDVD on a bundled CD from my motherboard purchase from last year.

I've only tried to copy 1 movie so far, and it worked fine. Even in my stand alone Hitachi player.

As for a free player, try heading over to www.doom9.org and check out the downloads section. He may have one there.

NEC ND-1100A for US$140, nice. It's about the same price as Plextor PX-504A at ZOA.

You can download a trial of PowerDVD here.

Unfortunately, the PowerDVD trial only lets you watch 30 minutes of video, which sucks.

Alternatively, you can download a trial of WinDVD Gold here or a trial of WinDVD Platinum here.

It is possible to view DVD's using Windows Media Player, all you need to do is download the MPEG-2 codec. Finding a working MPEG-2 codec may not be easy; I tried a couple supposed MPEG-2 codecs and none of them worked with Windows Media Player. I know for a fact that PowerDVD installs the MPEG-2 codec onto your computer and the codec is shared so that other media players can read (decode) MPEG-2 video. Thus, if you download the trial of PowerDVD you should be able to watch DVD's with other media players such as Windows Media Player.

Regarding servicing...if the drive ever needs servicing, NEC may service it directly. Some manufacturers don't mind servicing their OEM products. LG replaced my broken GCE-8320B burner without hesitation.
