Limiting speed?

Postby QQ on Wed Jun 18, 2003 10:37 am

Is it safe to use DriveTool to limit max read speed of CD-RW drive? Because I don't need ultra high speed for playing movies, I don't like the noise, and generally it seems too messy for me. If I set max read speed to say 32x, all is fine, and speed is good enough for my needs. But is it safe?

Question I'm asking this, is cause I kinda got paranoid about that. I recall having 8x Sony CD-ROM, and soon after using drivetool many difficulties reading cds appeared. Same happened with my 32x Sony CD-ROM. I don't want this to happen for my Lite-On CD-RW.

Is there any theoretical explanation behind that, or are those only coincidents?

You should be able to limit the read speed with no problems.

Now, If you had the Premium, they have the Silent Mode which allows you to limit the speed in the PlexTools Program for the following:
Write Speed
Read Speed
Access Time
Tray Speed

there is no inherent difference between using PlexTools or Nero DriveSpeed (i assume this is what grazza207 meant by "DriveTool") to limit the drive's speed.

I don't know about that...

Nero Drive speed is good, but it can be over-ridden by software too. For example, K-Probe, K-Prove doesn't care if you have DriveSpeed running or not, it tests at what you tell it to test at. However, Drive Speed has over-ridden CD Doctor on me a couple of times when I wasn't paying attention. This says to me that Drive Speed is not as optomised for drives as it could be. I am sure that Plextools is not so easily ignored by software!
