The trials and tribulations of an inCD user

Postby stingray on Mon Jun 16, 2003 6:19 pm

My tragic story (handkerchiefs at the ready) (system details below)

I am having some problems running inCD (version 3.5.19.2) bundled with Nero Express version OEM 5.5.10.4.

The pattern is as follows. I write a file (large 50MB+ with several folders, each with several files) to disc by opening "My computer" , until I get to the folder I want, right-clicking on the file and selecting "Send to Drive D" (the CDRW drive) . Everything appears to go OK for a while but eventually the system crashes (momentarily displaying an error message on a black screen) and reboots. If i now attempt to drag and drop any files to the disc, usually on the second file the system will hang. The only way to recover is to do a full manual power off and on again.

I tried 2 different media, both branded: 2 separate PNY 700MB rewritables and a Sony 650MB (1x to 4x) rewritable. They were blank, fresh out of the box, unused, and they got a full format beforehand with inCD. I got the same pattern of crashes/System hangs with both of them! I have no problems reading CDRW discs however.

I seem to be able to transfer the odd file or two succesfully (using the above described method) as long as there hasn't previously been a crash in that session of writing but any large scale transfer and the system seems to go belly-up. I also find the system slow to respond to my "send to" command when writing individual files - sometimes there is no animation which leaves the user wondering what on earth is going on. :-?

This is a brand new laptop, the operating system and drivers were preinstalled for me by the manufacturers (Evesham) the OEM Nero Express, inCD etc, was also supplied as a CD-ROM. Therefore it would be reasonable to assume that the software should work with the basic Win XP system.

However I also installed "Master Unit" , part of the Cubasis VST 4.0 (multitrack recorder) package. This application is used to burn Audio CDs only. I uninstalled it just in case, but I still get the same errors with inCD afterwards. All I have installed apart form that is Cubasis VST 4.0, Goldwave, a yamaha wave editor, Wavelab lite (wave editor) "Ability office" and a few small applications for handling Zoom PS02 files.

There are no antivirus programs installed, nor firewall - the laptop is not connected to the internet. I have never installed any other packet writing software to the system. The CDRW writer is correctly displayed in "device Manager".

If it is "Master Unit" causing the problem, and it is a big IF, then perhaps the uninstall didn't remove everything it should have. However i am not sure how to check if the uninstall was complete, and what to do about it. Or maybe the problem is elsewhere. Either way i'd appreciate some help.

An ancillary question is: Do I need to match the CDRW/CDR media to my burner write speed? I never bothered about this before, but i wonder what the consensus is.

Another problem is that the Win XP laptop (with Nero Express and In CD) cannot read CDRW discs created on a Win 98 PC using CD creator (version 3). In fact any attempt to read these discs can crash my laptop. Also i cannot do a full format on these discs to reuse them either. I am suprised at this because both programs recognise the UDF format. So what is going on here?

PS: Sorry about the length of this post. I've attached many of the technical details of the system as i can.

First suggestion, update Nero and InCD.

stingray:

You should take a look at the InCD troubleshooting guide:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=9572

Stay away from InCD 4.0.1.0 until it's debugged, but it won't hurt to upgrade to InCD 3.52.40; just download the executable

ftp://ftp.nero.com/InCD35240.exe

ftp://ftp3.nero.com/InCD35240.exe

and run it.

You may also download EasyWriteReader 3.3.2.0 (750,220 bytes):

ftp://ftp4.nero.com/EasyWriteReader.exe

Actually I'm not sure whether you need it, since apparently your burner doesn't support MRW (Mt. Rainier), and non-MRW discs can be read in CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives under XP SP1 natively. Further, you don't seem to have a second CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive on your system (unless you connect one externally). On the other hand, your Driver Information lists incdrm.sys v1.0.0.3, and thus apparently EasyWriteReader 3.3.2.0 is installed. Therefore, unless you really need it (see S8 in the InCD guide), I would recommend uninstalling it via Add/Remove Programs.

Going back to your problems, they could simply be due to a mismatch between your burner and media. Try to get some good 10x or 12x media, e.g., Verbatim.

Another potential source of conflicts may stem from an uncomplete uninstallation of Cubasis, or rather ASAPI (Vob's advanced ASPI interface):

http://service.steinberg.de/webdoc_ct_i ... _con_pc_en

Try to remove it via Add/Remove Programs, and then check LowerFilters and UpperFilters as discussed in S11.5 of the InCD guide.

The final suspicious item is SiSide, the SiS IDE driver. You could try reverting to the standard Windows IDE driver.

thanks. I'll uninstall "Easy write reader" first. Then try the verbatim media you suggested.

Then I'll try the rest, and report back.........

I've got a critical piece of advice for you:

Don't use CD-RW. Only use CD-R's.

A very good friend of mine swore on CD-RW's. He burned like 50 of them with DirectCD and then some with InCD, over a period of 3 years.

I told my sorry story of CD-RW's all of a sudden not reading properly, but he thought he'd be okay.

Well, the last few weeks, he's asked if I wanted a donation of 50+ unused CD-RW's, as he's gotten several bad CD-RW's that won't read at all.

Moral of story: CD-RW's suck. Worse than floppies, worse than Iomega's click-of-death zip disks.

In fact, use zip disks if you want re-writable media...

Recieved and understood "UALOneKPlus".

I am approaching all CDRW burning operations very gingerly at the moment, and if CDR is indeed more reliable, then i will always ensure i have important data backed up on cdr as well.

After updating to inCD 3.52.40 and uninstalling EasyWriteReader I have not had any problems burning smallish files, though i haven't tried any big jobs yet.

However I do find that there is more often than not, no screen animation during the writing process, although the operation itself seems to go smoothly enough.

I'm glad to hear about your progress!

Are you now using better CD-RW media?

Tell us how long it takes to copy about 400 MB of files to an InCD disc via Explorer. If your transfer speed is at least 5x (1x = 150 KB/s), there is little reason for worry (except for Explorer's animation).

If you still experience slow downs or hang ups, you could try the two options mentioned in my previous message.

Try to remove ASAPI via Add/Remove Programs, and then check LowerFilters and UpperFilters as discussed in S11.5 of the InCD guide. This shouldn't take long, and your Cubasis uninstallation is incomplete anyway. If you observed InCD's speedups, this would identify the culprit, and you would have to wait for the next release of ASAPI. On the other hand, if InCD's operations aren't affected by ASAPI, this may encourage you to install the Cubasis software later (if you really need it).

The second cause of InCD's slow downs could be the SiS IDE driver. Hence you could try reverting to the standard Windows IDE driver, but make sure first that the current SiS IDE driver can be reinstalled if needed (check the CD-s that came with your notebook, or the vendor's website).
