Are 8x8x24x8x Combo's Still Good?

Postby craiger on Sat Jun 21, 2003 10:15 pm

I thought about saving up for a Laptop. I like those laptops that are desktop replacements. However I noticed they only come with a 8x8x24x8x combo drive. Some have 16x10x24x8x. Are these drives ok, since the 52x24x52x16x combos are out for regular desktops or will the laptops that are desktop replacements add the 52x24x52x16x combo's soon? I saw a good Compaq Presario laptop - P4 2.4, 512mb ram, 60gig hard drive, ATI Radeon 7000 64mb 4x AGP and 802.11g, for $1500.00 coming soon to Best Buy. But they only had a 8x8x24x8x combo. Thanks, Craig.

You could use Firewire/USB2.0 to connect an external writer(CD or DVD).

I have a laptop with a DVD-CDRW combo drive. I've never had any problems with it, BUT I do alot of burning so I decided to buy an external drive that can handle it more. Whenever I ripped or burned with the laptop combo drive the disc was always quite warm, as opposed to it still being cool in the external drive.

I doubt that there is anything wrong with the slower drives except for the obvious fact that they are slow. I have an 8x8x24 CD-RW in my laptop, and it works fine. BTW, 24x CD-RW drives and CD-RW/DVD Combo drives are available for laptops now, too.
