So how loud would this drive be compared to say, the old Yamaha 20x? People said back then, that this drive was loud, but it just sometimes makes a high-pitched noise when spinning up. Does the Lite-ON have any kind of speed control utility to manually limit speed? Is this drive "smart"? Does it play audio cd's at 1X, or does it unnecessarily spins at a high speed?

I like my Pioneer 106s, as I downloaded a utility to put it in silent mode. Although it took a little performance away, I didn't like how it kept spinning the disc really fast unnecessarily when reading certain types of discs.

My 48x LiteOn is quieter than my 24x Yamaha, if that is a useful point for comparison.

LiteOn doesn't offer a speed control to limit the speed, but you can always use Nero's Drive Speed utility to do the job for you.

LiteOn drives are very good at intelligently selecting the speed to spin discs. Data discs go as fast as the drive can go, while audio CDs and VCDs and SVCDs spin at a very slow, inaudible rate (2x or so, I think). The same holds true for their DVD-ROM drives.

Nero (6.0.0.11) shows that my LTR52327S (firmware QS08) can write at 52x, 8x, 4x. What happened to speeds between 52x and 8x ???

I do not have any other writing software, so I can't tell whether it's Nero's problem or the drive's.

Nero InfoTool shows the same avaiable write speeds: 52x, 8x, 4x.

I updated firmware from QS01 to QS08 today, could that be a problem ?... Unfortunately, I didn't check wether speed selection was any different before the update. Only noticed it after update.

If somebody can check their write speed selection, please let me know. Thanks !

P.S. Some of you have firmware QS09. Where can I get it ?

If you put a blank disc in your drive, you'll see the available write speeds, otherwise just the drive's maximum.
