Cd drives reading only at 4x! *Solved*

Postby fruitseller on Mon Aug 18, 2003 12:38 pm

Dear friends,

I have a cdrom and cd writer installed
in my system...after I added another cd writer
to the system both other cd drives now read
at speeds of 3-4x only!

What could be the problem?

Thank you

make sure DMA is enabled.
check out the FAQ for instructions on how to enable DMA for WinXP/2K/98

For the new CDRW it says,in xp, "DMA if available" and in transfer mode "UltraDMA Mode 2"
but for the other CDRW it says "DMA if available" and in transfer mode "Single-Word DMA Mode".

The BIOS setup is:

PM - Hard disk
Transfer Mode - FPIO4/DMA2
UltraDMA - UDMA Mode 2

PS - CDROM
Transfer Mode - FPIO4/DMA2
UltraDMA - Disabled

SM - CDRW
Transfer Mode - FPIO4/DMA2
UltraDMA - UDMA Mode 2

SS - CDRW
Transfer Mode - FPIO3/DMA1
UltraDMA - Disabled

first of all, you should enable DMA in the BIOS for all IDE channels.
best of all, make it 'Auto' or something like that.

then enable DMA in the Device Manager.
check out the FAQ:

Solved.

It was the media. The other drives were
reading cdr media written at high speed
slowly.

Thank you
