I have been a long time visitor to the site but I hadn't looked into the forums until recently...... about 5 mins ago
Anyway onto my problem/queries .... I purchased the CDR-F1B dec 2002 after reading the review on the site and previous experience with yamaha drives, it was all looking good at this point. ho ho ho ho....
Currently my drive works perfectly well burning images onto my philips cd-rw80 (cdrw80d 12/100) disks as well as my philips cd-r80 silverspeed 32x media.
Then a friend of mine suggested I get some bulk media from a local computer shop. So I got 100 pieces 48x samsung cd-r media. I hadn't had to use them until yesterday, but when I did they failed. At first I thought I had a problem with the drive, but a quick check I could still burn the same image onto cd-rw disks and an email to yamaha support later confimed the media compatability issue. These media DO NOT burn at 1x or 44x using nero, log extract:

Now I thought even though yamaha had stopped making optical drives they were still going to support existing drives. Now it seems crazy to me that the drive won't work with Samsung media, they seem to be a huge brand in the UK. So what do they mean by support? No fimware updates for new media and only bug fixes/ no bug fixes at all?
As for my query about a firmware update (a reasonable request for a drive that is still supported) I was told:
Hello Sir,
As you stated in your mail, it is a media compatibility problem.
As an international company we can't support every brand of CDR(W).
Thanks for unterstanding.

I emailed back asking them to reconsider this position, or at the very least publish a full list of supported media types on the website so other people didn't fall foul of this issue and got this response:
Hello Sir,
Unfortunately such list of supported media is not available for each country
!
Thanks for unterstanding.

Is this correct? Certain media types are documented in the firmware release notes. Knowledge of these media types must have come from somewhere. I mean, they do make the drives to specification and as I understand it they have to program the firmware with data for each supported media type so it stands to reason that they can compile a list for yamaha customers.
Anyway.... so here I am lumbered with 100 pieces of 48x media that I can't use, so I think i'll just use them on my fiance's LG 8160B drive. Low and behold they don't work on this drive either. I have tried multiple disks btw.
So I guess I need to know if the samsung 48x cd-r media works on any drive at all? I really like my cdr-f1 but since media cost me £30 at the time I am in the realm of buying a new burner just to use the media. Does anyone know a burner which will use the samsung 48x media? Actual positive experience of the media would be good to hear.
Also which 44x cd-r media works on the cdr-f1 drive?
Thanks
