Problem Recognizing Disc SizeWith Nero 5.5.10.50?

Postby Ian on Fri Aug 29, 2003 10:23 pm

I'm testing the Lite-On LDW-401S and it wasn't supported with Nero 5.5.10.42 or earlier. I downloaded the latest update and things seemed to be working fine, until I tried burning an 80 minute CD. Then it tells me that there's not enough space on my disc.

The compilation I'm trying to burn is only 79:42:19 in size. The disc is an Imation 48x that's 79:57:73 in size. I normally don't have any problems writing this data to these discs.

Oddly enough, Nero doesn't prompt me to overburn either.

Looks like this is a problem with Nero. I just tried MSI's new 52/32/52 CD-RW and it gave me the same warning message. I just burned the same data a few days ago using an earlier version of Nero.

Sigh.. I guess its time to upgrade to Nero 6.

My less than faultless memory seems to recall reading an analysis once about the allocation of disc time for an audio recording. I don't know where it is now (assuming it wasn't a dream :D ), but this is somewhat the way that I recall it:

If your time measurement of the compilation is for the music content only, some other things may push it over the capacity limit.

First, there's the 2 second delay before the first track. Then there are the standard 2 second silences between tracks. Since there is only a 15 second difference between your rated disc capacity and the nominal compilation length (perhaps before silences), anything over 7 or 8 tracks might push the true length with silences inserted beyond the rated disc capacity. Anyway, for what it's worth that's the theory.

As far as the overburn prompt, is Nero already set up to overburn?

I just saw your latest post, and maybe it is a problem with Nero 5.5.10.50 if it worked with an earlier version of Nero. Nevertheless, it would be an interesting experiment to remove the silences between the audio tracks and see if the time was lowered to an acceptable limit. :)

It is a problem with the latest build. Uninstalled, reinstalled 5.5.10.42 and it worked fine. Uninstalled that version, ran Ahead's cleaner and then reinstalled 5.5.10.50. Guess what.. didn't work again.

Oh well.. looks like Ahead will be putting out another 5.5 build.

No wait on 6

Postby wonderwrench on Fri Aug 29, 2003 11:06 pm

To many bugs in 6. I swear it should still be considered a beta program.
I would say Ahead will get 5.5 fixed long before 6.

I have tested beta programs that had less problems. Ahead will fix 6 some day.
I hope they keep 5.5 updated until 6 works correctly.

I battled 6 since it came out but have given up at least for now.
I'm now using 551042 no problem but I bought 6 and feel ripped off.

Yeah, I was hoping they'd continue to add new writers to InCD 3, but that hasn't happened.

Well, I upgraded the old test box to Nero 6.0.0.11 and the problem is gone. Funk it..

Dear all,
latest Nero 5.5.10.50 is good enough in my opinion.I am again able to write and overburn successfully which I was not aboe to do in 5.5.10.35 and 5.5.10.42.I use a LG GCE-8240B on a Windows XP SP1 box.
I am able to write all kinds of discs comfortably, without any problems.I just have a gut feeling that 5.5.10.50 will be the last 5.5 we will see.
See ya guys later,

As far as I am concerned, Nero 5.5.10.50 is a buggy bust. It can't overburn properly.

The overburning bug is very similar to Ian's disc capacity problem. I tried to overburn 82:35 of data with the overburn capacity set to 82:45. Nero 5.5.10.50 ejected the disc, stating that the capacity was inadequate for the overburn.

After reinstalling v5.5.10.42, the overburn went off without a hitch.

I would recommend that anyone wanting reliable overburning or disc capacity recognition to not use Nero 5.5.10.50, but an earlier version such as v5.5.10.42.

Let's hope this isn't the last of the Nero 5x series, for v5.5.10.50 contains a major disc capacity bug.

Dear Inertia,
I really dont know, but when I followed your steps about overburning,I am again able to overburn.I was not able to overburn since 5.5.10.18.
But now I have overburned about 11 CD's successfully.
See ya guys later,

Same prob here, but with Nero 6.00.15, I trying to burn 701MB on a 703MB disk but Nero says that is no enough space.

Back to 6.00.11 :(

EDIT:
Confirmed, after Downgrade to 6.00.11 I able to burn 701MB.

OK, Ahead sent me 5.5.10.52. I'll try it later today and see if that fixes the problem.

seeing as you have some contact with Ahead, why don't you ask them to realese a Language Pack for the new Nero 5.5 too? they hadn't release a new Language Pack for 5.5.10.50!

What bums be is that Ahead doesn't have previous versions availible to try as alternatives.

I'd like to try 6.0.0.11 but now only 6.0.0.15 is availible on the web site....

as for 5.5.10.42, same thing....web site has v 5.5.10.50 only.

Not good.

Yes, that is a shame. Would be more convenient to keep it on the ahead server. 20MB is a bit much to send by email.
Some older Nero 5.5 versions are available here:http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=nero, but I haven't seen 6.0 versions anywhere yet. Wait, you might want to try http://www.filemirrors.com. It might be on there.

I was just about to pick up one of these, since the price seems reasonable (110 euro's) compared to others. Now I might wait a little and see how it performs.
Ian, what's the ETA on you review? No rush, just wondering if I should hold of on buying it for a little while longer. Thanks. 8)

We have been able to duplicate these issues with Overburning, and a bug report has been generated for both Nero 5.5 and Nero 6.0
