Nero 6 'Video DVD' discs - Compliant with DVD standard???

Postby VEFF on Wed Sep 10, 2003 10:51 am

I noticed that Nero 6 finally mentions 'UDF/ISO' in the compilation properties for 'Video DVD' compilations.

I used to have problems playing back Nero 5.5.x.x burned 'Video DVD' discs on some of my home DVD players, while Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5-burned DVD Video discs always played on every player I tried.

Possible Causes:
Was this a player issue? (Some people reported that their Nero 5.5. burned discs played fine). i.e. were my older players not fully compliant themselves?
Should I have chosen a 'DVD UDF/ISO' compilation instead of 'VideoDVD' compilation in nero 5.5.x.x?

To make a long story short, I just want to ensure that my Nero 6 'Video DVD' burn should play in home DVD players that properly adhere to the standard?

Thanks!

VEFF, did you see any difference between +R and -R. Every -R disc I've burned with Nero runs fine in any player. +R has given me problems on a couple occasions.

Actually when I was having problems (with 5.5.x.x), I was only burning
-R, which were a lot cheaper than +R at the time (ages ago).
Then I switched to Stomp exclusively for quite a while.

I have now started (all +R so far) using Nero again: I have two new progressive scan DVD players (one bought exclusively for MP3 DVDs, which the other doesn't play) and my older Apex and Toshiba, neither of which is progressive scan.

The Toshiba doesn't play DVD+R at all, so I haven't tested that with Nero 6 discs yet.
The other three ALL play the Nero discs now.
I will burn a -R tonight with Nero 6.0.0.11, just to see if the Toshiba can play it now. 5.5.x.x discs didn't play on the Toshiba or Apex.

That should let me know if Nero 6 is safe to use for DVD video.

I've always used ImgTool to burn DVD's (it uses your installed copy of Nero). Never had a problem with it. I've heard to old 5.x versions had problems with DVD video discs, so I always made them by manually chosing UDF filesystem and then putting in an empty AUDIO_TS folder plus the VIDEO_TS folder. Never had a problem with them...

Thanks BurninMan.

Just to clarify, did you choose just UDF (as it seems from your post) or UDF/ISO?
I thought I read somewhere to choose UDF/ISO?

Just UDF (but it's been awhile since I've used Nero, and mostly used ImgBurn). Always worked great...I've about about 60+ DVD-Video discs burned that way that all play fine. ImgTool is free, but needs Nero installed. Check out www.doom9.org for the links to the two differnent versions (one for Nero 5.x, one for 6.x).

Edit: According to the guides at www.dvdrhelp.com, it should be set to UDF/ISO mode. I'm pretty sure I always used just UDF mode, though.
Try one of each with a RW disc...

Here's the guide:

Thanks.
I have been using DVD video with Nero 6.0.0.11, and it works in both my newer progressive scan players.
I have yet to test the discs on my two older players.
