What is your Idle temp for P4 2.4Ghz and up?

Postby ryus on Fri Sep 12, 2003 11:46 pm

Just wanted to know what the norm should be. If I leave my comp on for over an hour, my idle temp is about 50 degrees C. If I play a game, with my 9800pro, my temp is around 60 degrees C.

Is this normal?

Thanks.

Pretty warm for a 2.4 assuming it isn't being overclocked. I've got a 2.6 @ 3.4 that idles @ 45 and 55 load. This is also with an abit board that typically indicates a higher temp than with other manufacturers.

I'd increase your case venitaltion, get rid of the thermal pad on the heatsink and use some decent thermal compound (Nanotherm PCM+ or Arctic Silver Ceramique) or get a new heatsink. Though the stock Intel heatsink actually has decent performance.

Might even want to do a combination of all 3.

Might also want to try reseating your heatsink.

I have a Vantec AeroFlow, with Arctic Silver 3. Not sure if I applied the AS3 properly. It was my first time. But if I remember correctly, I think even with the stock fan I was gettin similar readings.

Good question, I haven't been able to check the temp of my P4 2.4GHz, I can't seem to find any hardware monitor for my Intel D845PEBT2.

You might not have adequate airflow in your case then. What size of case? How many fans? Fan locations?

If you put too much on, that would cause your temps to be higher than normal.

I'd try reseating the heatsink. Clean both off with isopropyl alcohol and let them sit for a couple minutes.

Put a small dallop on the bottom of the heatsink, wrap a finger in some plastic wrap smear it around, then wipe it off with a paper towel. Be sure there aren't any fibers from the paper towel on the heatsink. That will fill in any small grooves and ensure a good mechanical fit.

You want a very thin layer of AS3 on the core. On the CPU, same thing (small dallop, finger in plastic wrap) then use the edge of a razor or a plastic card to even it up.

FYI AS3 takes 2-3 days of running full time to settle in so a decrease in temps can take up to a week.

You can tell if you put too much AS3 on by looking @ the heatsink when you pull it off. If there's a lot around the imprint of the core on the bottom, that tells you to use less.

with my new computer i get
--Mobo:34C
--CPU: 30C
My mobo is an asus p4p800dx and the "q-fan" thing is at 15/16 so the cpu fan rpm is running at 2600rpm thats why its only at 30C ..... If its on disabled or lower than 15/16 its running below 2000 rpm ... and 34C or more ....
Complete newbie to this stuff

I have the 2.53Ghz P4 running at stock speed and an Asus motherboard. I use the Asus probe software and my cpu temp is almost always at 40 to 45 C. My motherboard temp used to be at 24-26C for the first few months when I got the motherboard but the last few months it has been in the 37 to 45C range which is weird.

My idle temps on P4 2.4B are about 45C right now, but I have no case fans, no thermal paste between the CPU and cooler. I lapped both the CPU and cooler, mirror shine now, and I am still waiting for some Ceramique and a few Panaflo fans, but it seems my package is not being delivered :(

Oh yeah, the load temp goes above 60C.
