Audio CD playing

Postby ncw on Mon Sep 29, 2003 5:10 pm

I installed RealPlayer in my Win2k system, but it locked up every time I put a CD in! I have now uninstalled RP, but can't get the Microsoft CDplayer to work again.

I believe I have the problem described in Microsoft Article Q259473, but can't find the 'multimedia' box in Add/Remove Programs despite modifying Sysoc.inf in c:\winnt\ServicePackFiles\i386 (I assume that was right, there is another copy in c:\winnt\inf).

Also the Microsoft article implies that I need to uninstall and re-install a multimedia system component - this gives me a problem as I don't own the Win2k Prof. discs myself. Is there any way round this?

Thanks for any help offered.

You're running Win2K, right?

One thing you might want to try is installing TweakUI 1.33. Under the "paranoia" tab, I think, there is a checkbox for "play audio CDs automatically". Make sure that this box is checked; that may activate the MS Audio CD Player software again.

Edit: Here is a link to TweakUI.

Try these tricks:
1.In WMP go to Tools->Options->File Types...hit Select All and Apply.
2.In Explorer go to Programs->Windows Media Player->Installer and run MPSETUP.EXE(that will reinstall WMP).
3.D/l CDex

Thanks for the various advice - sadly none appears to solve the problem.

I've tried TweakUI already, even with the CD Audio boxes ticked it doen't fix the problem.

I'm asking about the CDPlayer, not Windows Media Player - and anyway the installer does not seem to be present.

Can anyone offer further advice, particularly any clarification on the Q259473 article, which does not seem to apply directly to Win2k - see my original question.

Problem solved!

I've now obtained the system files from another Win2k user and re-installed CDPlayer following the MicroSoft technical article - it works again!

Thanks to those who helped

Glad you got it solved.

That's why I don't install Realplayer.
